“It’s going to go through some very popu- lated places. So, it’s very easy to see and that’s why it’s so unique and so important,” said Andrea Girones, Councillor for the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC). The last total solar eclipse which passed over Ontario was in 1979 and the next opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse will be in 2099. “A couple of things to note is that, almost everywhere in Canada and the United States, people will see a partial solar eclipse. Now the closer you are to what’s called the line of totality, the more of an eclipse you will have. So, in Ottawa, for example, you have a 98 per cent eclipse. It means that it will stay partial the whole time and as long as you have a partial eclipse you need eye
protection. The total solar eclipse – when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and completely obscures the Sun for a short period of time – will take place between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., which overlaps with the dismissal times and bus departures of the schools within the district. Keeping the safety of students in mind, the school boards made this change to ensure students are at home during the eclipse and are not outside or enroute. A 98 per cent of a total eclipse This year, all North America will be able to witness this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The eclipse will begin in Mexico and will end in Newfoundland. The path of totality, where the moon completely blocks the sun, will happen in southern Ontario, near Kingston, south of Toronto and south of Montreal. The eclipse will start at around 2:10 p.m. and reach totality from 3:22 p.m. to 3:26 p.m.

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB), Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CSDBEO), Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario (CEPEO), and Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) have all advised parents and guardians that ins- tead of adding an extra PA Day in the school year or taking it from elsewhere to avoid sending students to school during the total solar eclipse, the students’ day off school will be rescheduled from April 26 to the day of eclipse, April 8.
