We are delighted to share Alice Woodruff's stunning collection of clay torsos, "Warrior Women," at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Over 100 sculptures - representing women's history across cultures and countries - are included in this exhibit. Captivating prose descriptions of the real-life heroines embodied by each torso enhance the exhibit's appeal to a diverse audience, echoing the mission, location, and outreach of Callanwolde. Woodruff's variety of techniques and glazes will be appreciated by both seasoned and novice potters involved in Callanwolde's large and active pottery community.

"" Alice Woodruff combines her knowledge about pots after 24 years as a functional potter with 11 years working with people as a nurse practitioner into creating figurative sculpture . . . . Pots and people come together in her stories of women who broke barriers , brave women told with grace , skill and the conviction of an artist who has something to say ." “' Warrior Women : From Invisible to Formidable with a Nod to # MeToo ,' represents the universal stories of women across cultures who have experienced social and political injustices ." The Warrior Women exhibition will utilize the Main Gallery space in the petite hall of the Callanwolde Mansion to display photographs , video and text about the artist , her process , and the work . The adjacent Studio Rooms will house the figures deemed appropriate for all ages . The remaining sculptures will be housed in the Conservatory , a former greenhouse where Callanwolde pottery sales are regularly held . Separating the exhibition in this way will allow us to create age appropriate programming specifically for the students that Callanwolde serves . We believe that there is tremendous potential for impactful arts education and hands - on creative expression opportunities around this exhibition and the works within .

Building upon the success of previous exhibitions like Howard Finster ’ s “ A Feeling Come Over Me ”, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center continues to expand its audience and offer high - caliber arts programming . The " Warrior Women " exhibition aligns with our mission to promote arts education and creative expression within the Atlanta community . The combination of rich narrative and emotional connection with technical skill and expertise provide a wealth of topics from which we can pull from to create meaningful programming . Howard Finster Exhibition Longtime Callanwolde pottery instructor , Jennie Ashcraft Berman , and founding Pottery Director , Rick Berman , loaned their private collection of work by Howard Finster for an exhibition entitled “ A Feeling Come Over Me ”. Howard ’ s first “ work of art ” along with many unique found objects were on display . Having built a close relationship with Mr . Finster as his art dealer , Rick Berman treated guests with fascinating stories of his days at Paradise Gardens . For this exhibition we offered timed RSVPs . Entry was free with a suggested donation . This donation model raised over $ 5 , 000 towards arts programming during the two week exhibition . Similarly , the Warrior Women exhibition would be open to all , with attendees encouraged to donate as they are able . Workshops would be ticketed , and other programming would be a mix of private and public events . Precedent and Expansion:
Demand for pottery classes at Callanwolde continues to outpace availability . With over 200 people on waiting lists for regular classes , our Pottery department recently introduced one - day workshops to allow greater access to popular activities like throwing on the wheel and Raku . We believe we can continue to grow and provide unique experiences inspired by the Warrior Women Exhibition and led by our talented instructors , as well as workshops and seminars from Alice Woodruff herself .
