On Friday, July 11, 2025, World War II Veteran Gerald Bartels was presented with a recognition medal by VFW State Commander Kenneth Yount and American Legion State Commander Judy Walters. It reads “On Behalf of a Grateful State, Thank You for Your Service” with the 48-star flag of 1946. The ceremony is part of an initiative launched by the Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs to honor Nebraska’s living World War II veterans. The recognition is given to living veterans who applied and served in the U.S. Armed Forces from December 1, 1941, to December 31, 1946. Gerald proudly served in the United States Marines.
