Regarding Text Books
o f Christ; our students have bought up every opportunity to deal with men, women and children about their souls. It has been the counsel o f most o f our workers and friends that we should not proclaim the specific wrongs that have been done us, as bitter as might be the things we might be tempted to say— but quietly to go about the Master’s business. Perhaps some of us have failed in some degree. If so, our blessed Lord with His holy example shames us into the dust. W e liave all been driven closer to God. W e have been made more conscious of having a Representative at the
^ ^ 0 ? N E of our friendly critics has given publicity to the mistaken notion that modernistic text- books are used and endorsed by the teachers in our Christian Education Course. Permit us to comment upon the books which have been “ Methods and Aims o f Religious Education” is a printed address by Rev. Charles N. Arbuckle of the Bap tist Church o f Newton Center, Massachusetts, that was
delivered before a Confer ence o f Baptist Leaders of New England in 1921. It deals in a general and very helpful way with methods and aims in teaching children. The author is not well known to us and we are not ac quainted with anything else he has written. This pam phlet has been assigned for collateral reading to give a general idea of the field of Christian Education. F r o m Professor Ath- earn’s book on “ Religious Education a n d American Democracy” the first chapter has been assigned as col lateral reading. This chapter deals with the fact that since the teaching o f the Christian religion has been taken out of the public schools, it is im perative for the welfare of our country as well as o f our boys and girls, that the church should take over the work that the school is giv ing up. T h i s seems ex tremely important to us, as we feel that education in the things o f the Christian re ligion is vital to our boys and girls. In the “ Curriculum o f

Within the last week, he has been honored by the largest Presbytery in the world in being chosen as a Commissioner to the Gen eral Assembly of the Presby terian denomination. This
And Now —
Let’s All Smile The year 1928 seems to have brought to some o f our brethren a degree o f spiritual dis cernment which they did not possess before. The contents o f “Peter the Fisherman Phil osopher” are said to be r a n k h e r e s y . I f our readers happen to have on file their copies o f T he K ing ’ s B usiness fo r the years 1913-14, turn to them and read the series of articles (running through one year’s copies) on the subject o f Christian Philosophy. The writer o f these articles was Dr. John M. Mac- Innis. Note who were the editors at that time. Mark the fact that with the first article the announcement is made that these lectures were given at the Montrose Bible Conference and were prepared fo r T he K ing ’ s B usiness at the special request o f the editor. Read those articles, then read “Peter the Fisherman Philosopher,” noting the correspon dence with the various chapters. There you will find many o f the very phrases to which such violent objection is now being made. And not a soul on earth offered a single objection at that time— not even the editors.
Religious Education” by Betts there is a chapter relating to Robert Raikes and the origin of the Sunday school. This was found in the Public Library and referred to when studying the history of the modern Sunday school movement. Nothing else has been assigned from this book. We differ quite frankly from Mr. Betts in certain points o f view expressed in this book and have taken up very thoroughly in our specialization classes both points of view, and the reason for ours. W e have tried to do this, however, in a constructive and never in a merely critical way. It is interesting to know that when the teacher in charge of this work came to the Institute she found one of Betts’ books, which was carried over from the previous administration, in our book store. “ Talks to Sunday School Teachers” by'Weigle is an inspiring and helpful book which teachers who are really anxious to understand boys and girls in order to lead them to Jesus Christ and build them up in a growing Christian life would do well to read. Mr. Weigle is widely recog nized as one of our most able and earnest Christian leaders. We understand that he is thoroughly evangelical. “ The Mind and Its Education ” by Betts and “ Talks to Teachers on Psychology” by James are not books on
Presbytery is renowned for its loyalty to the fundamen tals, and his being selected indicates the esteem in which he is held by the brethren in his denomination. The sincerity o f our critics, we would not question. In a recent letter to the writer, one of them says: “ I would rather see the Institute wiped out o f existence by a fire that would not even spare the ground on which it stands, than see it fall into the hands of modernism.” Bless his heart—what man in the Bible Institute o f Los Angeles would not say the same with all his soul? W e are comforted by the fact that some of our critics say they are much in prayer about this whole matter. Our own prayers will meet theirs at the feet o f Christ, suppli cating the Great High Priest that all who have been perplexed, and who sincerely seek the truth, may have minds susceptible to the voice of the Spirit. For those who would still be our enemies, we can only pray that the. Righteous Judge may speak to their hearts and at least make them mindful o f the souls that may be lost through their efforts to hinder God’s work through the Bible Insti tute of Los Angeles. W e call upon all our friends to join us in the prayer that God may have His way.
