brother, and hope your guardian genius,— Addison. Mrs. Margaret Bottame repeats a story which a friend of hers, who is a musician, related. This friend’s husband had ar ranged a musical entertainment for the benefit o f some charity, and the wife was playing the organ, thus leading the band of music as well as the choir boys. But in the midst o f it all she became so fasci nated with the fine execution of the band, and so delighted with the singing of the choir boys, that she ceased playing her self and listened. All at once her hus band rushed up to her, exclaiming, “ Don’t you know that you are leading? They are waiting for you!”vi' In an instant her hands were on the organ, and she resumed the leadership. All o f us have some little circle who are depending on us for their inspiration and leadership. Their hearts will faint if we do not give them A certain college president was elected a bishop. A friend advised him not to accept, saying: “ If you stay here you can make twenty bishops from among these young men.” Twenty-six missionaries of the American Board have come from Michigan University. When we remem ber that James B. Angell,|' an earnest Christian minister, was- for long at the head o f the University, and that his son has recently become president o f Yale, we understand the kind o f leadership that gets followers for Christ.*—Selected. The great highroad o f human welfare lies along the old highway of steadfast well-doing; and they who are the most persistent, and work in the truest spirit, will invariably be the most successful ; success treads on the heels o f every right effort— Samuel Smiles. IS :l- 6 . No E ast N or W est In Christ there is no East nor West, In Him no South nor North, But one great fellowship o f love, Throughout the whole wide earth. In Him shall true hearts everywhere encouragement.—Selected. Leadership Gets Followers.

Join hands, then, brothers o f the faith, Whate’er your race may be 1 Who serves my Father as a son, Is surely* kin to me. In Christ now meet both East and West, In Him meet South and North, All Christly souls are one in Him, Throughout the whole wide earth. Be it clearly understood that Scripture does not teach, as the subject might imply, the universal fatherhood of God. By the first creation we are the offspring of God (Acts 17:28, 29), but this does not imply individual relationship; which can only come by being born again. Rom. 4:11; 8-14-17- fk>1 3:26: Tohn 1:12-13: 1 John The key thought of the lesson assigned us for study this evening is found in the words, “ For even Christ pleased not Him self.” Yes, the underlying truth of the whole gospel is found in these words. Christ’s yearning passion was for the sal vation of lost souls. “ The Son o f man came to seek and to save the lost.” Christ-like unselfishness is what every Christian should seek to attain unto. Only when we completely die unto Self , and live unto Christ can we catch the right spirit o f love toward all men. Illustration on v. 3 : There was an Indian chief who lived in Northwest America, amongst the cold: and the ice and the snow. This chief had a visitor, a white man, who came ánd spent the night with him. In the morning the chief took his visitor outside the wigwam or hut in which he lived, and asked him a question. “ How many people do you think,” said the chief, “passed by this hut last night?” The visitor looked at the snow very carefully, and saw the foot marks of one man distinctly imprinted upon it. There were no other foot-marks tq }ie seen, so he said to the chief, “ Only one majv has passed by.” The chief, how ever, told him that several hundred In dians, in fact a whole tribe, had passed his wigwam in the night. And then he explained to him that when the Indians did not want it to be known in which direction they had gone, the chief o f the tribe walks first, and all the rest of the tribe follow in single file, each man plac ing his feet exactly in the footmarks o f the chief, so that no new footmarks are made, and it looks as if only one man had gone by instead o f hundreds. By this clever trick the enemies o f the tribe are not able to find out in which way they have gone, nor to overtake them, Now Jesus Christ is our chief. He has gone first over the path o f life, and He has left us His footmarks—His example. We must place our feet where He placed His. —o— C hoice N uggets Our bitter feeling toward any human being means defeat in every part cff our life. W e cannot be right with God while we are wrong with a fellow man; only the lives that are right with God are winning lives. That is a striking word in a letter from Dam Crawford, the African mis sionary : “What, a settling o f old scores there is when the blood o f the cross cleanseth away all crookedness between a man and a man, as well as a man and his God.
