opening service four boys slyly blew their tin whistles in the rear o f the gallery. The youngsters were brought before the preacher in thé vestry, where they expected a severe reprimand. Much to their astonishment, Dr. Jowett asked, “ Can’t you play better than that on tin whistles?” And before they could gather their wits together to know how to answer, he added, “ I must ask Mrs. Jowett to teach you to play properly.” She undertook to teach them, and in a few weeks’ time these same lads gave a fine whistle quartet at the children’s service, Mrs. Jowett accompany ing them on the piano. Thus they were won and used, and no better helpers could be found than these boys became.

Queen Mary, of England, has more than an ordinary natural shrinking from the sight o f illness and human mutilation, Kath leen Woodard has said. Yet this happened. She was visiting in a hospital which had a sailor patient with almost the whole front of his face burnt away. Only to see the man was an ordeal, even to members of the staff; and so great was his con sciousness of the horror o f his appearance that the patient had lost all his confidence. The head of the hospital approached Her Majesty thus: “W e think if you could possibly sit and talk with him for a lit tle while without betraying any consciousness o f his appearance, it would do him more good than anything else in the world.” So for a long time the Queen sat alone talking with the patient in his room, “ looking straight into his face, sitting near enough to touch him.” The significance of the story and its relation to the whole of Queen Mary’s career is in her afterthought: “ It was indescrib able; but then, of course, there simply is nothing one can’t do.” I heard Mr. Sankey say that when Mr. Moody and he were holding meetings in a certain place, the church was filled; and a great multitude gathered outside. In order that all might hear the singing, the organ was placed on the steps o f the church and Mr. Sankey sang the famous “Ninety and Nine.” On a distant hillside a man was sitting on a veranda, out of sorts with his wife and daughter because they had gone to the meeting. He had no interest in such things. As he sat there one verse o f the song, carried by the breeze, reached his ears: “None o f the ransomed ever knew How deep were the waters crossed, Nor how dark was the night that the Lord passed through, Ere he found his sheep that was lost.” It was an arrow that pierced his soul, that led to his con version. How little we know what use God may make of our efforts to witness for Him! ■vESi^H M ay 16, 1928 T ext: Psa. 23:4 A man was nursing his little,, blind daughter on his knee.
