Should you ever cross the Atlantic from New York to Queenstown, you will notice that as the ship moves down the bay, she is in charge of the pilot, who guides her past all dangerous shoals,' and only when she is safe in the deep ocean does he leave her in charge o f the captain, who is well acquainted with the ocean, and is capable of taking the steamer safely to the other side. There is a lesson suggested by this for those who are young and are tenderly watched over by loving parents. You will soon have to go from father and mother, who have tried to take you past all the dangers o f youth, and you must soon pass out on the great and untried ocean o f life. Who is your cap tain? Have you none? And if not, had you not better take Jesus for your captain? He can still the storm and calm the waves; he never lost a soul. A young widow, a Christian woman, with two children, was living in the city of Berlin. One evening she had to be away for a while. During her absence a man entered her house for the purpose o f robbing her. But “the Friend that sticketh closer than a brother” protected her. On returning, she found a note on the table Which read as follow s: “Madam, I came here with the intention of robbing you ; but the sight of this'pittle room, with the religious pictures hanging around, and those sweet-looking children quietly sleeping in their little bed, touched my heart. The small amount o f money lying on your desk I leave untouched, and I take the liberty o f adding fifty dollars besides.” The hearts of men are in the hands o f God, and “He turneth them as the rivers o f Water are turned.” Prov. 21:1. An innocent life has a power to protect and to win friendship beyond everything. Prov. 16:7. M ay 28, 1928 Text: Prov. 18:24 A young minister in a college town was embarrassed by the thought of criticism in his cultivated congregation. He sought counsel from his father, an old and wise minister, saying: “Father, I am hampered in my ministry in the pulpit I am now serving. I f I cite anything from geology, there is Professor A., a teacher o f this science, right before me. If I use an illus tration o f Roman mythology, there is Professor B., ready to trip me up for any little inaccuracy. If I instance something in English literature that pleases me, I am cowed by the presence of the learned man who teaches that branch. What shall I do ?” The sagacious old man replied: “ Do not be discouraged. Preach the Gospel—they probably know very little o f that.” M ay 29, 1928 Text : 1 Cor. 1 :23-25
