Alongside rising participation, the UK tness market is becoming more competitive. Growth in demand has been accompanied by sustained levels of openings and closures, creating a market dened not just by expansion, but by continuous churn and repositioning. In 2026 alone, new openings signicantly outpaced closures, reinforcing overall market growth. However, closures remain a material feature of the landscape, indicating that expansion is accompanied by a consistent cycle of site exit. This suggests that growth is not evenly distributed, but concentrated among operators best able to meet evolving performance expectations. At the same time, the structure of the private market remains relatively stable. Larger operators
account for around 30% of sites, while independent operators continue to represent roughly half of the market. This balance has shown little change over time, indicating that while scale provides advantages, consolidation is not accelerating. The result is a market that is both expanding and highly competitive. New entrants can still establish a presence, and independent operators remain a core part of the landscape, but performance thresholds are rising and underperforming sites are more likely to exit. Ultimately, growth is being accompanied by sustained competitive pressure, with success determined by a combination of scale, differentiation and operational execution.
