WHY GET A PHD IN SOCIAL WORK? Graduates become leaders in education, research, and government. Our PhD program is a four-year, research-intensive program.
Substantial mentoring by world-class faculty Our faculty have expertise in gerontology, child welfare, family violence, diversity and social justice, and organizations and communities. Students have opportunities to develop close working relationships with a team of faculty during their doctoral studies. Program Overview • 4-year program • 2 years of coursework and applied learning Individualized curriculum The strength of the PhD program at Iowa is its interdisciplinarity. Students concentrate in Sociology, Psychology, Education, or Public Health. Interdisciplinary training helps graduates examine social issues through multiple lenses. Opportunities to publish The comprehensive exam in Social Work is a publishable scoping or systematic review. Students collaborate with faculty as research assistants or in research practica. Part-time program A small number of applicants may be admitted to the 5-year PhD program. This decelerated program is optimal for working professionals. The 5-year program does not provide financial support. Joint MSW/PhD program We strongly encourage applicants who have a passion for conducting research after graduation to apply to both the MSW and PhD to efficiently obtain both degrees.
How are PhD students supported?
We award admitted students a minimum of three years of research or teaching assistantships. Assistantships include tuition waivers, health insurance, and a monthly stipend. The SSW offers funds for PhD students’ travel to conferences and dissertation expenses. Students are eligible to apply for additional fellowships and funding from the Graduate College. Many of our students have successfully obtained national awards. About 75% of graduates obtain academic positions conducting research and teaching Graduates obtain positions at: • Columbia University • Utah State University Extension • Tulane University • University of Northern Iowa Admissions Applications are due February 1st We do not require the GRE
