What is an apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are government-backed initiative designed to bring education and learning into the workplace. Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16, and they can study from a Level 2 up to degree level. Apprentices are employed by Sterling from day one of their apprenticeships. You will spend part of your time with one of our training partners studying a qualification relevant to your role. The rest of the time you will spend at Sterling getting trained on the job. Why choose an apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are a proven way to develop your skills while studying at the same time. Unlike other learning routes, your apprenticeship training is fully paid for by Sterling’s apprenticeship levy. You also earn while you learn and have access to the same benefits as all other Sterling employees. Why work for Sterling? At Sterling we truly live our values. We care about our people and our customers, and focus on delivering an exceptional, transparent service to both. It’s how our company, our people and our apprenticeships have consistently operated over the last 50+ years.

Our training partners

How does an apprenticeship work? Sterling works with training partners to design specific training programmes to meet your needs and ours. Practical training is delivered in house by skilled, time served Sterling employees, meaning you will learn industry-specific skills from day one. To develop your knowledge, you will undertake your academic studies, typically one day per week. At work, you will develop and record your new knowledge, skills and behaviours (typically in a portfolio of evidence). In the final stages of your apprenticeship, you will complete an end point assessment to demonstrate you have met the requirements of the apprenticeship.

We work with a number of training partners, throughout England, including:

Quality department case study “Apprentices are crucial in our analytical department, forming 10% of our team. Our Laboratory Scientist programmes provide our analysts the skills they need to perform and succeed. An apprenticeship with Sterling is an effective way to develop skills and gain a qualification. Apprenticeships help to ensure that the skills our people develop match what is needed to exceed our customers’ expectations. As a leader, one of my proudest moments, was watching one of our laboratory scientist apprentices win the North East Apprentice of the Year Award for their work on a prototype instrument from one of our suppliers. From their work on this project, they were able to collaborate with other organisations, and were asked to present their findings in the US and Switzerland to other potential customers.”

Engineering department case study “Sterling’s dedicated apprenticeship pathways combine academic study with hands on practical training, to create apprentices with the behaviours and skill sets we need to achieve our goals. Apprentices are key to departmental growth. By finding their strengths and utilising their interests, an apprenticeship sparks motivation in our apprentices, leading them to achieve and take the department forward. Our apprenticeship programme is designed around our values. Our apprentices develop into self-managed employees, who understand the value of their work and their impact on Sterling. The curriculum of learning equips them not only the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in their chosen roles, but it also provides them with the life skills, confidence and purpose they need to succeed.”
