A MEANINGFUL FATHER’S DAY: THE GIFT OF LOVE AND TIME
As I’ve walked through some stores recently, I’ve seen so many signs claiming “THIS is what your dad wants for Father’s Day,” or something similar. I usually look below the signs and, inevitably, see things like handy tools; pairs of shoes, shirts, and ties; a set of knives; sports equipment; lawn mowers; barbecue grills; or even steaks! When I run across these ads telling my family what I want for Father’s Day, I can’t help but think to myself, “Is that really what I want? Is that really what most dad’s want? Will buying that for a father figure actually express to them just how much they are loved and appreciated?” Don’t get me wrong — some of those items look really nice, and I’m sure I could enjoy them. But when I think about what Father’s Day means to me, why my family sees fit to celebrate it (and me), and what being a father is really about, none of those items come to mind. I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy anything for your dad. If he’s been dropping hints about a new gadget, then by all means wrap it up and give it to him! No doubt he’ll appreciate the thought. But this year, I encourage us all to take it beyond cards and gadgets, and really think about what I believe
all dad’s want — quality time, meaningful relationships, and experiences that will bring the family closer together. Even though my kids are young, they know that I value spending time with them. In that way, the ideal Father’s Day gifts for me would be simple things like reading a book, playing a board game, or going on a fun outdoor adventure with them. Every Father’s Day, my wife helps the kids make me breakfast-in-bed.
me laugh), and then they sit in bed with me and eat all the food they just brought me. It’s a simple tradition my wife carried over from her childhood, but it’s come to mean a lot to me. Spending those moments with my kids, seeing their art, and even eating the toast all make me feel more loved and appreciated than opening any gift could make me feel. When my family gives me the gift of their time, I feel celebrated. As my kids get older, the breakfasts might get a little fancier, and someday they’ll be gone altogether as my kids start Father’s Day traditions of their own. I can only hope that when they think of me on Father’s Day, they’ll know that what I want most is time with my family, shared memories, and a phone call. To me, you don’t add more time and effort in the gift-giving process with each passing year; you just need to brainstorm ways to continue fostering a close, loving relationship with the dad in your life. A shared experience will mean so much more than a tie or a beverage mug in the long run.
It usually consists of simple things they can do themselves — toast, yogurt, and some kind of fruit. They bring it in on a tray loaded with pictures they’ve each colored of me (or sometimes totally random things that make “I can only hope that when they think of me on Father’s Day, they’ll know that what I want most is time with my family, shared memories, and a phone call.”
To all the dads out there, Happy Father’s Day!

WHAT’S NEW WITH OUR TEAM AT THE OFFICE BABIES, WEDDINGS, AND PUPPIES! OH MY! While families all across the world are hastily preparing for Father’s Day celebrations, graduation ceremonies, and epic summer vacations, several of our team members at Anderson Dental Care also have several huge life milestones to commemorate this year!
Kids often look up to their father as one of their greatest heroes. There are the long drives to sports tournaments, the late-night movies, and the sweets when Mom isn’t looking. We probably all have some reason to look up to our dad as one of our biggest influences. It’s Father’s Day this month, a special time of year when we take a moment to think about the sacrifices the father figures in our lives have made for us. Most dads are pretty great, but some go above and beyond the fatherly call of duty. Let’s take a look at some heroic dads who risked everything to keep their families safe. Life can change in a split second, and how you choose to react in a moment of peril can define your legacy forever. Few people know this as well as Brad Lewis. When Brad and his young son, Oscar, were deeply entrenched in an intense Nerf battle, he surely didn’t think the situation would turn as dangerous as it did. When a few darts missed his father and landed on the balcony, Oscar ran after them but soon found himself teetering on the balcony’s ledge, 12 feet above the ground. Thinking fast, Brad grabbed his son just before he fell over, both taking the plunge while Brad protected his son with his own body. Just as he’d intended, Brad absorbed most of the blow. While Oscar sustained serious wounds, his father’s injuries were more severe. Brad was left fighting for his life in the ICU, with severe fractures to his skull and vertebrae. Thankfully, Brad is expected to make a full recovery and has made serious strides since the accident. He and his son will live to play another day. While camping in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in June 2015, Greg Alexander awoke to the sound of a nightmare. The screams of his son intermingled with the roars of an unknown assailant, beckoning Greg to his son’s tent. There, he found his son Gabriel being attacked by a bear. The bear had his son by the head and was dragging him away. Greg jumped on the bear’s back, desperately trying to take attention away from Gabriel. Amazingly, it worked, and in the end, the bear ran away. Gabriel was left with serious cuts to his head, but thanks to his dad’s heroism, the two were able to walk away from that campsite and back to their lives together. PAIGE , one of our talented hygienists, recently purchased the house of her dreams with her fiancé. When Paige isn’t in the office helping patients achieve their best smile, she is planning all the final touches for her wedding, which takes place this month! SYDNEY , our dedicated treatment coordinator, is also getting married this year, though her wedding will take place in August. To add to the excitement in her life, Sydney also got an adorable dog just last month! ALI , better known as our hardworking, expanded- function dental auxiliary, has some thrilling news of her own: She and her husband are expecting a baby this November! If you see any or all of these lovely ladies during your next visit, be sure to tell them “Congratulations!” We’re all very excited for their upcoming ventures!
The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to take a leap of faith or fight a bear to
be a hero in your family’s eyes. Just be yourself, show some support, and do the best you can. Happy Father’s Day, everybody.

HOLD ON TIGHT! PREPARE FOR FAMILY FUN AT AN AMUSEMENT PARK THIS SUMMER
WATER COSTS HOW MUCH !? Amusement parks are expensive, and when you spend a whole day seeking thrills, you’re eventually going to need sustenance. Check the park’s rules before you leave, but most will allow your family to bring in a few snacks, like fruits or granola bars, and a reusable, empty water bottle. Many parks will have a drinking fountain near the entrance where you can fill up before exploring. If you plan to eat or drink at one of the establishments in the park, peruse the food options on the park’s website ahead of time to get an idea of what is available and how much money you should bring. Adventure awaits this summer! Don’t let a lack of preparedness keep you from enjoying a 135-year-old tradition.
On June 16, 1884, the first roller coaster in the nation opened to eager and brave participants at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. In the years since the first riders climbed aboard the Switchback Railway 135 years ago, roller coasters and the amusement parks that house them have changed dramatically. But the thrill that attracted all those first participants still remains. Celebrate the nation’s love of heart-stopping adventure by visiting an amusement park this summer. Follow these tips to make the most out of your trip. I’M LOST! Before you head out, review park maps and ride descriptions. Create a list of the attractions everyone in your group wants to see and plan out your route ahead of time. While some spontaneity can be fun
— it’s a vacation, after all — the sheer size of many parks coupled with high anticipation can be overwhelming if you aren’t prepared. Planning ahead will save you a few headaches and disappointed family members. PACK THE ESSENTIALS Find an over-the-shoulder bag or strap on a fanny pack to carry your cash, keys, snacks, water bottles, sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses. You’re spending the whole day outside, so make sure you’re considering the weather when you head out and always slather on a generous amount of sunscreen. Lastly, wear comfortable walking shoes to prevent blisters and aching heels. You’ll have more fun if you know you’ll be prepared for anything.

INGREDIENTS
• 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, or 6 tbsp ghee • 3 russet potatoes (about 1/2 lb.), peeled • 1 tsp Kosher salt, plus more to taste • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste • Pinch of cayenne pepper, plus more to taste
DIRECTIONS
1. In a small saucepan, heat butter over medium heat until foamy. Reduce heat if needed to avoid browning. Skim off white milk solids to make clarified butter (ghee). Transfer to a bowl and reserve. (This step won’t be needed if using ghee.) 2. Using the large holes on a box grater, grate potatoes. Transfer to a large bowl of cold water and stir until water becomes cloudy. Rinse potatoes under cold water, then squeeze out liquid using cheesecloth or a kitchen towel, removing as much moisture as possible. Season potatoes. 3. In a large nonstick skillet, heat butter (or ghee) to medium-high. Add potatoes and cook until a crust forms underneath, about 5 minutes. Using a rubber spatula, break up potatoes and continue to cook, adding more butter (or ghee) if potatoes begin to stick.
4. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 8 minutes. Drain on paper towels; season with salt, pepper, and cayenne to taste. Serve.
