CENTENNIAL BEACH Profile
The Aquatics division of the Recreation Department is responsible for the overall operations associated with the Centennial Beach aquatics facility. The Beach is supervised by one full-time Aquatics Manager who is supported by numerous seasonal staff in the positions of managers, lifeguards, customer service representatives, swim lessons instructors, and swim team coaches. The Aquatics Manager is responsible for supervising Beach operations as well as managing the District’s indoor aquatics program offerings. Centennial Beach, originally developed in the early 1930s, is home to Naperville’s largest outdoor aquatics facility. Once a stone quarry, the “Beach” holds 6.2 million gallons of water and has become a unique summer swimming destination for the community and surrounding areas. The budget for memberships and daily admissions was developed using a three-year average. The facility opened Memorial Day weekend and closed Labor Day weekend in 2025. Membership sales were slightly below budgeted revenue by less than 1% or $3,600; however, daily admissions were below budget by 13% or $113,000. Due to inconsistent weather patterns, overall attendance was down by 10% compared to the three-year average.
Centennial Beach expenses are projected at 6% or $67,500 under budget due in large part to administrative oversight of staff schedules and the control of overtime expenses. The surplus for the facility is projected to be below budget by 17% or $61,200. Overall, the aquatics programming at Centennial Beach experienced steady participation this past summer in swim team and water aerobics. Participation in group swim lessons was down while participation in private swim lessons continued to rise. Participation numbers in 2025 were 792 compared to 935 in 2024 for group swim lessons. The water fitness class had steady participation numbers with 3 fewer participants registered than in 2024. The Paddleboard Yoga program experienced steady participation with 4 more participants than in 2024. The Mudrats swim team participation remained steady in participation in 2025 with 2 fewer participants than in 2024. Safety continues to be a top priority at Centennial Beach. The lifeguards scored an “Exceeds” on all three of this year’s lifeguarding audits, which is the highest possible score. The recruitment of lifeguards will continue to be a top priority for the District during the off-season.
Lifeguard positions will be posted in November and all returning lifeguard staff will be reevaluated for a determination of rehiring. New in 2026, beach management staff will be developing a staff leadership program targeted at growing leaders within the lifeguarding and guest services departments to better serve their peers. The 2026 budget includes staff wage increases of a maximum of 3%, which is a result of the need to recruit and retain staff required to operate the facility. There will be no scheduled fee increase for memberships or daily admission. Centennial Beach is budgeted to achieve a surplus of $357,800 in 2026.
