These criteria include populism, favouritism and neopatrimonialism. The study highlights how the Algerian media system transitioned from mobilisation to alignment with the authorities through the use of public authorities’ containment and exclusion strategies. These strategies include direct methods such as granting subsidies, the burden of the debts of public printing houses, and the distribution of proceeds from public advertising. The features of favouritism manifest through distancing media outlets from the role of supervising the executive authority, pushing them to assume a more promotional role rather than an informative one.
