Mark Tobey 1890–1976, AMERICAN
Mark Tobey is known for his densely structured abstract paintings and prints, and as the creator of the modernist style, White Writing. He lived in New York from 1911–1922, then moved to Seattle to teach at the Cornish School. In 1925 he went to Paris, starting a lifetime of frequent travel. Tobey returned to Seattle several times throughout his lifetime, co-founding the Free and Creative Art School in 1928. He was away from the PNW from 1931–1938 while a resident artist at Dartington Hall, a progressive school in Devonshire, England. Tobey again returned to Seattle in 1938 to teach and paint, exhibiting internationally. In 1960 he settled in Basel, Switzerland until his passing in 1976.
