Hellcat engine arrives at JEEP

To compete with its German rivals — such as the BWM X5 M, the Mercedes- AMG GLE 63 S and the Porsche Cay- enne Turbo S — Jeep has released a new Trackhawk edition of the Grand Chero- kee, equipped with the phenomenal Hell- cat engine that debuted inside the Dodge Challenger and Charger last year. This supercharged 6.2-L V8 delivers 707 horsepower and outputs 645 lb.-ft. of torque. Unofficially, this powertrain en- ables the Grand Cherokee to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and travel a quarter-mile in 11.6. To control and dir- ect the power to the four independent

wheels — which are equipped with 295/45R20 tires — the 8-speed Torque- Flite automatic transmission has been re- inforced. The braking system comprises 400-mm discs in front and 350-mm disks in the rear, while the Brembo callipers are equipped with six pistons in front and four in the rear. The interior of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is outfitted with leather seats, carbon-fibre appliqués and a 320 km/h speedometer. As for the compact SUV segment, Jeep’s Compass has been entirely redesigned. Compared to its predecessor, the new

generation sits on a firmer platform that improves handling, comfort and off- road capabilities. Shorter but wider, the new Compass offers a more spa- cious interior for both passengers and cargo. Note- worthy accessories

include a panoramic sunroof, electronic trunk controls and the Uconnect multi- media system, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The standard-issue engine is a 2.4-L, 180-horsepower 4-cylinder with 175 lb.- ft. of torque. It can be mated to a front-

traction drivetrain with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 9-speed automatic transmis- sion. The AWD option (either Active Drive or Active Drive Low) is only avail- able with the automatic transmission. Finally, towing capacity for the Compass can reach 907 kilograms.

HYUNDAI broadens its horizons

Hyundai has made several significant changes to its lineup this year, including the launch of the brand-new fully

electric Ioniq and the creation of the new Genesis lux- ury brand to com- pete with high-end Japanese, Amer- ican and German lines. What’s more, Hyundai is slated to debut a new urban SUV for 2018: the Kona. The Ioniq is a compact hatchback that aims to compete mainly with the Toyota Prius. Three eco-friendly powertrain options are available: hybrid, recharge- able hybrid, and electric. The hybrid version is powered by a 4-cylinder 1.6-L Atkinson cycle engine and a 32-kW elec- tric motor that consumes an average of 4.1 L/100 km. In electric mode, the rechargeable hybrid has an approximate range of 40 kilometres before requiring backup from its gas-powered engine. As for the fully electric version, its
