This June, Horizon Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation is celebrating its 10th anniversary. When I began this business back in 2012, I could not have predicted what it would become. The journey has been more challenging and rewarding than I anticipated when we first opened a decade ago.
keep doing what I’d been doing until that point. I took more courses, and one on sales and marketing proved especially fruitful. I invested in marketing materials, and they started to pay off. By 2019, there was enough interest in our services that we began renovations. We’d previously only used a portion of the building, but taking a wall down enabled us to open up the space and see more people. We’ve also added more equipment, and we now have more staff working for us than ever before. But I’m still eager to hire more people committed to this work and the community for the long haul. Having bodies is nice, but having people who treat your patients well is essential.
When I first started considering opening a clinic, I wanted to learn everything I could to help people feel better. No one has all the answers in medicine, but I felt like I needed to have as many as possible. I took every class I could find to improve my skills. I ended up meeting Clarence Sevillian, who was then the CEO of a local hospital group and has gone on to become even more successful. When I told him of my aspirations, he gave me some advice. He told me that before investing my time and money into a business, I needed the experience to confirm it was what I really wanted to do — and that I was capable of it.
Reaching 10 years in business would not have been possible without the support of our patients and the local community. So, we want everyone who contributed to our success to participate in the celebration. We are holding an open house on Saturday Aug. 6, 2022, from 2–5 p.m., and we hope you will join us to see how things have changed over the years. Just as much, I want everyone to know where we’re heading. I plan to continue growing the clinic over the next five years, but I also want to do much more. My goal is to become more active in educating our community so they can avoid and rid themselves of their aches and pains. So many people have been told they have to live with their conditions. That often isn’t true — they just don’t know what to do to help themselves. By spreading the word, we can teach people that help is available, and there’s reason to have hope for the future. I, for one, cannot wait to see what it brings.
So, I took a director’s position with a company that had historically not done very well. I increased their number of visits by three times their previous levels, proving that I had what it takes. But the organization still had many problems, so I went back to my roots of treating patients and learning everything I could. At the same time, I was also laying the groundwork for my future clinic. When my employer moved, it was perfect timing for me to make my move. It wasn’t easy. I lost my first employee after only three months. But it was a blessing in disguise; in her place, I hired our office manager Janean, who has been with us ever since. It was also harder to find patients than I’d hoped. And I was now making 40%–50% less for more work than I’d been doing before.

SCHOOL’S OUT! WHAT CAN YOU DO?
4 Activities to Keep Your Kids Busy
It’s summertime, which means your kids are out of school and at home during their break. This is an exciting time because you get to spend more time with your children, but it can also be stressful. Since your kids are not engaged in school every day with their peers, you may have to find ways to keep them entertained during the summer. Luckily, there are a few activities your children can do to stay busy and active while they’re on summer break. Visit your local library. Make a habit of visiting your local library once a week for your children to pick out books they can read. You can challenge them to see how many books they can complete over the summer. Although your child may read educational books for school, now is their time to pick out something they want to read just for fun. Some libraries offer summer reading programs and activities that your child can participate in. By going to the library over the summer, your child’s mind will stay engaged, and their love for reading can increase. Go to local attractions. In most states, there are history and science museums, art galleries, and zoos that you and your children can visit. If these attractions are state-funded, they often have free admission for visitors. These activities are great if your child is a visual learner. They can touch and interact with exhibits and learn more about history or science. Who said learning couldn’t be both fun and educational? Create a craft station. Do you have creative children? Then a craft station is a perfect activity to get their creative minds turning! You can either go to your big-box store and pick up some arts and crafts supplies, or you can use items
from around your home, such as used printer paper, toilet paper rolls, old colored pencils or crayons, and items from nature. If you need inspiration on what to make, you can look online for different crafts your child can create. Visit parks and recreation areas. Summer camps can be expensive; luckily, some parks and recreation centers host day camps that are much cheaper than private camps. Sometimes they will have daily activities that your child can participate in to burn off some energy. If you’re looking for a place where your children can play outside and stay active, going to your local parks is a great resource. If they aren’t hosting day camps, you and your children can play outside by throwing a Frisbee, having a picnic, or going on a nature walk. Summer is an exciting time, and with these activities, you and your child can spend some quality time together!

SCIATICA CAN BE A REAL PAIN IN THE BUTT Physical Therapy Can Help

If you’ve ever suffered from sciatica, you know that it can make every movement excruciating. The condition affects anywhere between 10%-40% of the population and is one of the most common causes of back and leg pain. But even though the discomfort can be unbearable, many people think they have no choice but to wait it out. Sciatica is not a diagnosis; it describes symptoms resulting from a pinched sciatic nerve, which travels down your lower back and through both legs. There are several causes, including a herniated disc, bone spur, complications from diabetes, and more. While the sciatic nerve exists on both sides, only one side usually becomes injured at a time. The pain can be present in the lower back, upper buttocks, or thighs. Although anyone can develop sciatica, older age, higher weight, preexisting conditions like diabetes, and lack of exercise increase the risk. You should always see a doctor if you develop the pain after an accident, begin experiencing sudden and severe pain, have difficulty controlling your bowels or bladder, and experience no improvement after a week. Meanwhile, mild sciatica usually resolves on its own, but many of the things people do at home to relieve their pain can make the problem worse. Too
much hot or cold therapy can negatively affect the healing process, and attempting to power through without proper guidance can exacerbate the condition.
Physical therapy is a much better choice. It can provide significant relief from symptoms while improving flexibility and mobility. Depending on the cause of the patient’s sciatica, a physical therapist may offer massage, hot or cold therapy, extension and strengthening exercises, hydrotherapy, dry needling, and other treatments. They will cater therapy to each individual depending on their needs and abilities, making most patients feel better faster. Even better, a physical therapist can often treat the underlying cause of your sciatica, reducing the risk of additional or repeat injury. And even when they cannot cure the condition, a physical therapist can typically provide treatment and techniques to minimize the impact of its symptoms on your life. Sweet and Spicy BBQ Chicken Skewers
Ingredients
For the Marinade •

Juice of 1 lime
3/4 tsp smoked paprika
1 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp salt For the Skewers •

2 tbsp chili garlic sauce
2 lbs chicken breast, cut into bite-size cubes 1 small pineapple, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 tbsp rice vinegar

3 tbsp honey
Directions
1. In a bowl, whisk together marinade ingredients. 2. In a reusable freezer bag, combine cubed chicken and all but 1/4 cup of the marinade. 3. Seal bag and massage marinade into the chicken. Chill in the fridge overnight. 4. The following day, preheat the grill to 400 F. Thread chicken and pineapple onto skewers, adding two cubes of chicken for each cube of pineapple. 5. Grill the skewers for 3–4 minutes per side, brushing with the reserved marinade in the final minutes. 6. Serve over rice or with your favorite barbecue sides!

3 TIPS THAT CAN HELP YOU There has been an increasing amount of people who experience anxiety at their place of work. In 2018, Wrike, a tech company, released a survey which found that 68% of people feel anxious while at work. Here are a few tips to help decrease the amount of anxiety you may feel in your work environment. Don’t Suppress Your Anxiety Instead of pushing away your anxiety, allow it in and practice acceptance. If you try to ignore the way you’re feeling, those emotions can bottle up inside and make you feel overwhelmed. Instead, you can acknowledge why you may be feeling anxious, process those emotions, and then carry on with the rest of your day. It’s all about your mindset and how you look at the situation — will you let it positively or negatively impact your day? Ask for Help Work can become hectic and busy, and it can be easy to say yes to something even if you have a busy workload. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need to; it will provide the clarification you need and remove some of your stress. It can be hard to ask for help, but communicating with your superiors shows that you genuinely care about excelling.
Practice Self-Care Sometimes all we need is to focus on ourselves. Don’t forget to take care of
yourself and attend to your feelings. You don’t want to change how you live and limit yourself from doing other activities. Take time to pamper yourself and live life to the fullest. If you continue doing what brings you joy, that feeling will follow you while you’re at work.
Work can be stressful — and that’s okay. Everyone feels stress and anxiety in their lives; what matters is how you deal with it. This may take some time, but with dedication and practice, you’ll find yourself less anxious while at work — and in every other part of your life as well.
