Starting my own payroll business: my personal journey
S tarting a business is never easy, but for me, launching Augustus Payroll Services was the culmination of years of experience, resilience and passion for payroll. My journey started when I left school at 17, having struggled academically due to chronic asthma and dyslexia. I spent much of my childhood in and out of hospitals, missing large chunks of school, and was often told by teachers that I wouldn’t amount to much. My parents fought to keep me in mainstream education and against the odds, I passed all my GCSEs. However, the exhaustion of pushing through meant that further education wasn’t the right path for me, so I chose to learn on the job instead. “The moment I graduated with my parents, husband and two children watching, was an overwhelming one” My first step into the working world was as an administration assistant at a local chocolate packaging factory. I quickly became drawn to payroll and human resources, gradually taking on more responsibilities. Covering for a colleague during sick leave, I handled the entire weekly payroll process, and that’s when I realised my passion for it. I wanted to develop my skills further, so I took evening payroll courses at a local college, which boosted my knowledge and confidence. Payroll is often an undervalued profession
