Larona ’ s Letters

Dear Residents and Families, Happy Spring! We have Daylight Savings Time behind us, which truthfully takes me at least a week to adjust to. I know Kim, and Chloe had a lot of fun with St. Patrick ’ s Day, and Ena made sure we had the traditional corned beef and cabbage. As the weather starts to warm up, we are looking forward to putting some of those outside activities back on our schedule. Sitting outside on the patio to not only soak up some of the sunshine, but also to enjoy all the beautiful flowers sure makes us feel better. We are also starting up our Walking Group again to get our steps in and explore our area. Watch out for April Fool ’ s Day. You know what they say! “ Don ’ t trust anyone or anything on April Fool ’ s Day … pretty much like any other day of the year! ” Larona

Activity Highlight - Scrabble We love to play Scrabble at Timber Ridge. Each week we have a group of 3 - 6 players at each one. Our rules are a little different in that we like to socialize while playing and also are not above helping our fellow players (if needed) find a good word to play. Its all in good fun! To improve your brain ’ s performance, you don ’ t need to follow a strict and tasteless diet, or enlist expensive specialists. Instead you can try something that isn ’ t as costly or difficult to follow. Try playing Scrabble! Researchers have found out that Scrabble players made use of a different area of the brain while forming scrabble words. Training our memory leads to improved cognitive capacity, which means that your brain will be more efficient when dealing with challenging tasks. One of the effects of playing Scrabble is learning new words, but playing this game will also have a direct impact on the performance of your brain. All good for your memory! Taking good care of your brain

doesn ’ t have to be tedious. The best medicine doesn ’ t always have to taste bad, but somehow we are more doubtful about its effects if our assumption is proven to be wrong. Regularly playing Scrabble with our friends is not only fun but also a great way to ensure that we stay on top of our game ...literally!

April Dates

Mobile Milestone On April 3, 1973, Motorola employee Martin Cooper stood on a New York City street corner and made the first cellular phone call to a colleague at Bell Labs in New Jersey. Unlike the first telegraph mes- sage (“ What hath God wrought? ”) or the first telephone conversation (“ Watson, come here. I want to see you. ”), Cooper ’ s words have been forgotten. His device, however, is now everywhere, thanks to a purchase price far below the original price tag of $3,995. Let the Good Times Roll All April long, opponents will be throwing their knuckles down. Don ’ t worry, this isn ’ t anything sinister. “ Knuckles down ” is the position you assume before shooting in a classic game of marbles. So, this April, Knuckles Down Month, you too can play for keeps. The classic game of marbles is called ringer. Two parallel lines, lag lines, are drawn 10 feet away from each other. A large 10 - foot circle is drawn between the lag lines. In the middle of the circle is a

Major League Debut

This marked the first moment that an African American athlete played a sport in any of the major leagues . Robinson did not get a hit that day, but was awarded the first ever Rookie of the Year title that year. In 1949, he was named the National League ’ s Most Valuable Player. In 1955, he led the Dodgers to a World Series victory over the Yankees. A perennial All - Star and Hall of Famer, Robinson ’ s num- ber 42 was retired

Millennial Fur Babies:

“ The millennial generation, born between 1981 and 1995, surpasses all previous generations in their devotion to pet ownership. Sometimes called the “ fur baby ” generation, millennials are reshaping what pet ownership looks like. They tend to pour time and money into their feline and canine companions and treat them almost like children. As a generation, millennials have delayed

milestones like marriage, parenthood, and home ownership. This is at least partially due to unexpected amounts of student debt, inflation in housing prices, and stagnant wage growth relative to cost of living. As millennials reach their 30s and 40s, pets offer a way to enjoy some of the benefits of adult life without all the expenses of having a baby. More than half of millennials own pets, and 33 percent of pet owners in the United States are millennials. In the past, men did not own as many cats as women, but millennial men have more cats and dogs than other generations. Pet - centered businesses are creating a whole new economic niche. There are cat cafés, brew pubs where you can bring your dog, pet hotels, pet portrait artists, and even spas, acupuncture, and massage for pets. Companies like Chewy and BarkBox cater to millennial pet parents with curated subscription boxes of toys and treats. High - end pet fashion is booming, with brands like Wild One offering minimalist, Instagram - worthy harnesses and leashes for dogs and cats and subtly scented grooming wipes. The boutique chain store J. Crew sells pet accessories like flannel neck scarves in its accessories department. Luxe brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Pendleton sell $400 pet ensembles. Pet costumes sell out every Halloween, especially pumpkins, bats, and bumble- bees. Whether it ’ s organic food, GPS trackers, or plush beds, millennials are proving that when it comes to their pets, nothing is too much for their “ family. ” Many are willing to spend more on pet pampering than on themselves and are willing to go into debt to care for a pet. ”
