New direction, same leadership The S.A.F.E.T.Y. program was previously funded and run by the city of Detroit, but it was cut due to budget restrictions in 2013. NCADD picked up the program that year along with Phillips who had been facilitating the program since 2000. It was her experience that caught the eye of NCADD President and CEO Dr. Benjamin Jones, who praised Phillips’ leadership as well as the passion and commitment she brings to the organization. “You need to have that person who can make the connections and implement goals and objectives, not just develop them, but implement them and see them through to fruition,” Dr. Jones says. “She is a person who exudes confidence, she believes in what she’s doing and she believes that we can be successful.” “You’re in a position to become the best you can be.” - Terry Phillips Bright future N Th
Phillips says her message to students is always the same: “You’re in a position to become the best you can be.” And NCADD will be there to help them every step of the way. When the program was still part of the city, it offered college tours, a summer employment program, and other opportunities for student enrichment. Phillips, along with assistant coordinator Karl D’Abreu, has been working hard to develop new fundraising sources and is looking to relaunch many of the previous initiatives in the near future. But she says she is incredibly proud of the work the program has been able to accomplish with NCADD and is looking forward to building on that success in the future.
