In the 19th century, the labor movement influenced the American working class in a major way. Before the movement, workers were overworked and exposed to abysmal and dangerous job conditions. The average American was expected to work a 12- hour day, seven days a week. Employers didn’t give many immigrants or extremely poor workers breaks, nor did they provide sanitary facilities or even access to fresh air. In the late 1800s, the workers decided enough was enough. On Sept. 2, 1882, some 10,000 workers took unpaid time off and marched from city hall to Union Square in New York to protest these conditions. This event became the first Labor Day parade in our history and was the start of major change. It was these workers’ efforts, who fought for their rights
