Recycling, Trash, Brush and Bulk Service Guide for DeSoto, Texas Transition to carts and streamlining services Starting June 1, 2024

DeSoto Residents Will Now Have 95-Gallon Carts for Recycling and Trash Cart and Service Details • Carts will be delivered to residents starting in mid-May, for use starting the week of June 3, 2024 • Each DeSoto resident will receive one recycling cart (light blue lid) and one trash cart (black lid) • Trash days will remain Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday, while recycling service will remain on Wednesdays. Set out your cart each service day by 7 a.m.

Residents have a collection day, not a time. Recycling and trash may be collected any time between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Service Day 1 Only Republic Services carts will be serviced. No extra bags, bulk items, or customer-owned containers will be serviced. Cart

The recycling day will remain on Wednesdays for the entire city. Only Republic Services recycling carts will be serviced ( no customer-owned containers or bags ). Large boxes which do not fit inside the cart can be broken down and placed next to the cart. Service Day 2 Republic Services trash carts and up to 3 cubic yards of extra items (bags, leaves, bundled brush, small bulk items, boxes of loose items, etc.) are allowed each second service day. No customer-owned containers are allowed (see bulk section for more details).

Door-Side Assistance Residents who are mobility-challenged or visually impaired may receive door-side assistance for their trash and recycling services. To qualify for door-side assistance: • There must be no other physically capable resident in the home • The resident must apply for assistance at DeSoto City Hall and agree to meet with representatives from the City of DeSoto and Republic Services

Placement: All recycling, trash, brush and bulk items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection days. Closed Lids: All cart lids must be completely closed. Large, broken-down cardboard boxes are allowed outside the cart on your recycling collection day. Extra bags of trash are allowed outside the cart on your second trash service day. Cart Placement: Carts should be placed with the wheels against the curb or at the edge of the alleyway. Large Bulk and Unbundled Brush: Place items at the front curb, as close to the street as possible. Do not block the bulk pile or unbundled brush pile with vehicles. Please allow 16 feet overhead clearance above piles to allow for Grapple claw to move and service.

Did You Know?

To dispose of medical sharps safely, place the needles in a puncture- proof container. You may place that sealed container in your regular trash cart when ready. For medical waste, please bag and place in trash cart, ensuring no needles are exposed. Examples of puncture-proof containers.

The City of DeSoto hosts an annual Household Hazardous Waste collection event each spring. If you cannot wait for this event, you can dry your water-based paint with sand, dirt, or kitty litter. Once dry, place the can in your regular trash with lid off.

Construction debris is now allowed in weekly trash, as part of your second service day bulk or extra trash option. You may put up to 3 cubic yards total of items outside the trash cart.

Small Bulk Item Service DeSoto residents can set out 1 large bulk item (street-side) or up to 3 cubic yards of small bulk items (like bags and bundled brush) each week, on either Thursday or Friday. Examples of large bulk items that are 3 cubic yards include a three-seater couch, a double/full mattress and box spring set, and a double-door refrigerator. 3 cubic yards on the second service day

Bundled brush piles should be cut into 4-foot lengths, be no more than 6 inches in diameter and weigh no more than 50 lbs. Use rope, ribbon, twine or fishing line to tie bundles.

Large Bulk Item Service or Unbundled Brush

10 cubic yards once per month, or 12 times per year

Each home will get 12 on-call large quantities of bulk items or unbundled brush collection each year. Please call the DeSoto Action Center at 972.274.2489 or submit a ticket on the My DeSoto app to request your monthly collection. Republic Services will collect your items within 5 business days of your request.

If a resident uses his or her 12 collections before the end of the calendar year and needs more service before the start of the next calendar year, there will be a $50 brush fee to request service. Republic Services will contact you to collect payment and schedule your 13+ unbundled brush or excess bulk service.

How to Keep Your Cart Clean Residents are responsible for keeping their recycling and trash carts clean and sanitary. To keep the carts odor- free, make sure to: • Drain all liquids from containers • Put all trash in bags, and tie them securely • Wash your cart regularly with soap and water or bleach and water • Only put cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and glass in your recycling cart Carts Are Property of Republic Services • Republic Services will be responsible for delivery. exchange, repair and removal of carts at your home • If your cart is damaged or stolen, please call the DeSoto Action Center at 972.274.2489 or submit a ticket on the My DeSoto app for a repair or replacement • Cart movements will be handled by Republic Services on your next service day, when your cart will already be out for service • If you move from your home in DeSoto, do not take either cart with you . The carts are the property of Republic Services Holidays Only four holidays will impact service each year: New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day . Service days which fall on or after a holiday will shift ahead by one day for that week.
