Neal Thrash is a familiar name for most basketball fans around DeKalb County, as the coaching veteran was at the helm of the Fyffe Varsity Boy’s program for 28 years before retiring this past year. In his final season he led the Red Devils to the Class 3A State Basketball Championship, where Fyffe defeated Montgomery Academy 49-43 for the program’s first ever state title. During his time as a head coach, Thrash reportedly had an overall winning record of 559-261. Since retirement, the legendary coach has taken a step back from head coaching, but he not giving up his courtside seat just head. Thrash is taking his 40 years of total coaching experience to Boaz, where he has been hired as an assistant coach. He will be working under Pirate’s head coach Cale Black and helping players with their defensive skills. Thrash leaves Fyffe in good hands, as the Red Devils have hired Dustin Bryant as the program’s new head coach. Bryant is a 2007 graduate from Fyffe, and he is returning home after coaching the Ider Varsity Girls for the past four seasons.
