WORK IN PACIFIC COAST HARBORS Oscar Zimmermann, Supt.

S OME years ago, it is well remembered, the first Japanese merchant vessel entered Los Angeles Harbor. That same vessel after trips to various seas and harbors, arrived last month at the port o f San Francisco. Ships seem to be. almost human, and we felt as though an old friend had arrived. Boarding her, we were somewhat disappointed to find that not a single person on board was known to the worker, all having left in the course o f time and having been scattered broadcast —and so has been the gospel given to those men! Is it not God’s order to; spread the Gospel thus ? And has not this many times been the worker’s experience, often only a few weeks’ time being needed to achieve the result? After personal inter views, or a revival service where God’s Spirit has been graciously manifested, He has seemed to say, in the words o f Paul: “And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the Word o f His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance- among all them which are sanctified.” So many—-the multitudes —are not brethren; do they not need, even more, prayer ? The reception on that boat was fine, and before long a wireless operator was engaged in conversation. He professed to be a Christian, (the only one on that ves sel), and had a Bible, but in spite o f his profession he still seemed to put as much trust in the idols as in Christ. It was rather difficult to deal with him as he could understand but little English, yet God

opened a way. The worker had him open his Bible to certain verses, and he told the worker what the verses spoke of. So the right verse was found, read and blessed o f God until the claims o f Christ were made plain, and after a long inter view the truth took hold o f 'him and he promised that he would let Christ have His way in his life and would read the Bible daily. O f late, many o f the river steamers ply ing between San Francisco and the numer ous bay and river points, as far as Sacra mento and Stockton, have been boarded and reached. A field opens up for a larger boat, equipped to carry two or three work ers, during the vacation period! Hundreds o f small villages, great farms and a for eign population largely untouched in a defi nite, soul-winning way, are easily acces sible. Are the large settlements o'f Chi nese, Japanese, Russians, Portugese, etc., not calling to us? We are praying that arrangements can be made for next sum mer to cover with the Gospel many needy places with the aid o f Institute students. A bigger hull than the launch we are now using on the Bay would meet the need splendidly. Will you not pray about this? I f you desire further particulars, write the Bible Institute. On one o f these river steamers, a fellow was found who professed to be a Chris tian, but Who was not sure o f his salva tion. Conditions in the world' among Christians made him bitter and he was a backslider. It was a little cabin, yet God
