the temple. 17 . And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house o f prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves. 18 . And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy; him: for they feared him, because all^the people was aston­ ished at his doctrine. 27 . And they come again to Jeru­ salem: and as he was walking in the temple, there dome to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, 28 . And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?

29 . And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask o f you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 . The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer^ me. 31 . And they, , reasoned with themselves, saying, I f we shall say, From heaven, he will say, Why did ye not believe him? 32 . But if we shall say, O f men; they feared the people: fo r all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. 33- And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto, them, Neither do I tell you by what author­ ity I do these things. message? How should we hold our pos­ sessions, as regards the Lord ? Have you anything that He wants to use that you will not let Him have? Can you expect Him to bless you while you do so ? What did Jesus want the ass for? What was His usual way o f entering Jerusalem? Why could He not walk at this time? See Zechariah 9:9. What did the disciples do when they brought the ass to Jesus? What did some o f the people do? And what did still others do? What did they proclaim Jesus? What did they mean by “the king­ dom o f our father David?” See 2 Samuel 7:12, 13, 16, 19, 25, 26, 27, 29; Luke 1:32, 33; Mark 15:2, 26. Did the disciples and the people understand that Jesus was to be a king and to rule over a kingdom in a literal sense? Had they as much'right to understand that literally as they had to understand Him literally when He sent them for the ass? If they should' have understood that the king and the kingdom were spiritual and not real, should they not have sought for something other than a literal ass? I f Zechariafi’s prophecy of

T NTRODUCTION . With this lesson -*■ begins the history o f our Lord’s last week on earth, before His resurrection. The events o f the lesson occurred on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, April 2, 3, and 4, A. D. 30. The places are Bethany, Jeru­ salem and the road between the two. I. The King Entering His Capital, verses 1 - 11 . Near what two villages does the narra­ tive say our Lord was? Where were they situated? On the way from Jericho to Jerusalem, on the Eastern side o f the Mount o f Olives, about two miles from Jerusalem. There is still a village o f Bethany, but Bethphage has disappeared. The name “Bethany” means “date-house,” while “ Bethpage” means “fig-house.” What had just occurred at Bethany? See John 12:1-11. On what errand did he now send two of His disciples? What would lead us to believe that the owner o f the ass whs a friend—probably a disciple o f Jesus? What did the disciples find when they went as the Lord told them?
