FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES This work was done in a collaboration between several Public-School Districts and other institutions and families by MOVIA Robotics with the intention of developing and refining commercial products and services for the benefit of special needs students and service providers in the ASD community. The author holds a position at MOVIA Robotics and has a conflict of interest. Aspects of the system are based on initial research at the University of Connecticut funded by the National Institute of Mental Health: IMH through R21 and R33 awards (1R21MH089441-01, 5R21MH089441-02, 4R33MH089441-03 Anjana Bhat PI, Timothy Gifford COI).

outcomes. This is one of the areas that we’re looking at within our research. The clinicians, teachers, and parents are telling us there is definitely a benefit to the interactions offered through the Robot-Assisted Instruction. They report that they have seen the skills learned with the robot being used by the children in many different situations. RAI is being used successfully in the community. The Teacher’s Aide has been deployed to over 60 schools around the world. The HomePal is now being used in over 50 homes. Several schools have been using the current version of the product for multiple years. Our initial family customers have renewed their subscriptions. They have been using the system for a year and a half. This is heartening for us because this means that one, the child and robot are able to maintain engagement for that long period of time, and two, our constant updating of material keeps the child learning and growing. The facilitators find the system is easy to use and that it has a clear benefit for the children and adults with ASD so that the parents are willing to keep using it over that long period of time. Robot-Assisted Intervention is an exciting new paradigm for learning and therapy. Our library of lessons, activities and therapeutic interventions is growing rapidly. We look forward to growing the community of people using our tools, and to continuing to help children and adults to learn and grow.
