AHSAA RECLASSIFICATION The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has approved a new classification system for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years. The new plan creates six classifications for public schools and two classifications for private (independent) school members. The seven class system, which was added in 2014-15, will no longer be in effect. Meaning that Class 7A has been removed. The state's largest classification is now Class 6A. The AHSAA is studying a plan for Class 6A that could see more teams advance to the state football playoffs. They are also studying adding a sub-regional round in the state volleyball playoffs similar to the basketball playoffs prior to the Super Regionals. According to the AHSAA, the 2026-27 and 2027-28 breakdown for each classification is as follows: Class 6A (32); Class 5A (64); Class 4A (66); Class 3A (66); Class 2A (65); Class 1A (69); Private Class Double A (17); and Private Class Single A (43). Two associate members are also among the AHSAA’s member public schools and one private school associate member for a total of 425 high schools. One of the schools undergoing the biggest change in Northeast Alabama is Albertville. The Aggies went from Class 7A to Class 5A. Some of the other Class 5A schools in the Alabama Ledger's coverage area from around Northeast Alabama are Arab, Boaz, Douglas, Scottsboro, Southside, and Fort Payne. Program-II (ATRIP-II), a program created by the Rebuild Alabama Act. The Rebuild Alabama Act requires ATRIP- II to be an annual program setting aside a minimum of $30 million off the top of ALDOT’s share of new gas tax revenue for projects of local interest on the state highway system. Under the ATRIP-II program, there is no requirement that local governments put up matching funds to be eligible. However, all 25 projects in this round received additional local funding. “Since 2019, Alabama generated more than $2 billion, paving the way for 500 vital road and bridge projects in all 67 counties. None of these projects would have happened without the passage of Rebuild Alabama,” said Governor Ivey during her recent state of the state address. Governor Ivey has awarded $40 million in ATRIP-II grants to local governments in each of the last five years, exceeding the $30 million minimum required by the Rebuild Alabama Act. “Rebuild Alabama continues making generational transportation improvements a reality. I am proud to award funds towards these 25 projects. Our success with Rebuild Alabama will only continue,” said Governor Ivey. The projects were selected by the ATRIP-II Committee created by the Rebuild Alabama Act. It is anticipated that a number of projects will be under contract during the 2026 fiscal year. All projects are required to move forward within two years of the awarding of funds.
The Gadsden State Community College Theatre Program will present Rumors, a farcical comedy by Neil Simon, at 7 p.m. on February 26–March 7 in the Inzer Hall Black Box Theatre on the Wallace Drive Campus. First produced in 1988, Rumors centers on four couples attending a dinner party celebrating the tenth wedding anniversary of New York City’s Deputy Mayor, Charlie Brock, at his elegant Sneden’s Landing townhouse. When Charlie is discovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and his wife, Myra, is nowhere to be found, the evening quickly descends into chaos. Although the injury is only a flesh wound, the guests concoct increasingly outrageous stories to conceal the scandal before the police arrive. As the first guests—lawyer Ken Gorman and his wife, Chris—arrive, they desperately attempt to piece together “the story” before the remaining couples show up. With each new arrival, confusion and miscommunication multiply, propelling the night into classic farcical hilarity. Known for its fast-paced dialogue, witty humor, and escalating misunderstandings, Rumors showcases Neil Simon at his comedic best. “This is a show I had the privilege of performing in many years ago while I was in school, and it remains one of my greatest memories as a theatre student,” said Joe Fuselli, director of the Gadsden State Theatre Program. “I hope our audiences and these actors enjoy it as much as I did.” More than $40 million in state transportation funding has been awarded to cities and counties for various road and bridge projects around the state. This includes projects in three of the five counties in the Alabama Ledger’s print edition coverage area. A total of 25 statewide projects have been announced at a cost of just over $40 million in state transportation funding. Of those awarded projects, 20 were from cities and counties putting forward more than $11 million in local funds, creating an investment of over $52 million in total. In DeKalb County, state funds of $146,200 will be used for traffic signal upgrades at various intersections on US Highway 11 and Highway 35. Local matching funds of $1,956,600 make the total cost of the upgrades just over two million at $2,102,800. Marshall County will also receive funding for traffic light upgrades along various intersections on Highway 205 in Albertville. The State has allocated $450,000 for this project. A total of $650,000 in local funds will also be allocated, to bring the total value to $1,100,000. Etowah County has invested $2,000,000 in local funds, and received $376,630.50 in state funds, for intersection improvements in Gadsden at East Meighan Boulevard and College Parkway. The funding is made available through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement

The search warrant came about as the result of an ongoing investigation into a convicted violent felon living at that address believed to possess multiple firearms. During the course of the search warrant, Investigators and Narcotics Agents recovered two
firearms, methamphetamine, marijuana and steroids from the residence. As a result, Christopher Lane Burks (45 of Ider) was charged with Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess Firearm (felony warrant), Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess Firearm (x2), Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance (x4), Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. “Our deputies work daily to protect the citizens of our county from individuals who show no regard for the law and we will remain vigilant and hold all offenders accountable for their actions," said Sheriff Welden.
