MEET AND GREET— A CHANCE FOR THE SUNRISE RESORT TO GREET NEW RESIDENTS! Thank you to Gina Stinmetz, Mary Fischer, Rosemary Jutte and Faith Zoerb for giving us the resources Sunrise has available to learn more about the community. As newbies to Sunrise Resort, we appreciated the opportunity to learn about our new neighborhood at the Resort as well as about some of the marvelous adventures calling to us from all around Arizona! To learn more about the fun here at Sunrise, drop by the Activities office. While you ’ re there, check out the TV, computers, and comfy chairs available for all in the Saguaro Room. You also will find fliers and business cards for a number of businesses and activities near here on a rack in the cor- ner of the Saguaro Room between the pool room and the door leading out to the library and post office. For those of us catching up to the technology age, there are 2 great re- sources online. In addition to the public FB group at facebook.com/ SunriseRVResort, Roger Juhl set up a private Facebook group just for resident interaction where we can post a last - minute invitation (i.e. “ Hey—who ’ d like to join me hiking up the face of Superstition this after- noon? ”) -- and then pictures of the adventure! (Plus any other activities that might interest you and your neighbors … or items you have for sale. You ’ ll see the scope once you get on.) Go to Facebook and search for the group “ Arizona SR Friends ”. Ask to join, answer the screening ques- tions (you can just say “ newsletter ” for where you heard about it) and he ’ ll add you to the group! (Continued on Page 10)

Continued From Page 2 (Meet & Greet) To learn more about adventures around the Valley, Gina shared a couple of great resources just up the street. One of them is the Apache Junction Library at 1177 N Idaho Rd. Frankly, I have practically lived in libraries my whole life, and I was absolutely floored by what I found there! They are not only a marvelous, huge, very diverse library … but they also have classes for all ages and interests --- and information and passes for many local attractions! Find out more at www.ajpl.org. You ’ ll love it! Another great resource for special activities and places to visit in the area is the Chamber of Commerce. This was just one of many billboards … and yes, the Renaissance Festival is only a few miles from here and lots of fun! Find the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce on the web at www.ajchamber.com -- or around the corner at 567 W. Apache Trail. The room is FULL of billboards, posters, and booklets about adventures waiting for you here in Arizo- na, whether you want to reach them by foot, horse, car, or plane! Enjoy!

Sales & PM Rentals

Hello Residents of Sunrise! For those that do not know me, my name is Alysia, the Business Admin- istrator, Sales and Rentals at Sunrise RV Resort. I will be coming up on my two year anniversary in April and hope to have many more years at the park. At the moment, I have two homes for sale: #193 listed at $40,000 and #437 listed at $49,500. I do have a brand new home that is available for

sale also. If you would like to see these homes, please come in and see me or you can give me a call to schedule an appointment. On the other hand, if you are interested in selling your park model, I definitely recommend selling it with me! I take care of the showing as well as taking pictures of the park model to post online. The paperwork and negotiations are all in - house to make the process easy for you! I am hoping to have more homes for sale as time goes on. If you or your family members are looking for a rental, I have about 3 park models that will be ready soon, however with our policy the entire month must be booked, we do not offer weekly or daily stays for the rentals.

Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather and are staying busy with all the activities going on!

4 Peaks Elementary School Sup- ply Drive A huge thank you to all our amazing residents! We raised just over $3200.00 in cash plus sup- plies that were donated. We were able to pur- chase a much needed color printer, storage boxes for sports equipment, footballs & soccer balls. Also, lots of paper products for each classroom including markers, pencils, earbuds & more. I can ’ t thank you enough for your generosity. Next year Dave Olsen will be taking over this project and I know you will give your continued support. We will get some pictures when we deliver to the school.

HOW CAN YOU BEAT GOOD FOOD, FUN, AND FELLOWSHIP? By Flo Wheeler The All - Purpose Room was nicely filled Friday evening, Jan 20, for the Fish Fry and Karaoke Sing. In fact, at one point the line for that deli- cious, fresh - out - of - the - fryer cod extended all across the room. Several of us decided we were glad we got there early … yummy! We were beautifully entertained by the Karao- ke singers as we finished our meal. What an

amazing group of talented singers we have in our community! Bravo and thank you to all of you who participated!

More good food and fun are coming up in February that you don ’ t want to miss … be sure to check the calendar, get your tickets at the Activities office, and be there with bells on! We had a good crowd—but there was defi- nitely room for more. Come join us for another great evening! 13

Valley Fever Coccidiodes organisms live in desert soils and produce long filaments that contain infectious spores. When the soil is disturbed, for example by a dog digging, by construction, or during a windstorm, the spores become airborne and can be inhaled. It is thought that dogs are so frequently diagnosed with Valley Fever because they commonly disturb and sniff dirt in their normal, daily activities. Once inside the lungs the spores mature and reproduce within “ spherules ” —small structures in which many “ endospores ” develop. With time, the spherules rupture releasing the endo- spores that can then spread the infection within the lungs or the rest of the body. Symptoms of Valley Fever in Dogs Many dogs who are exposed to Coccidiodes immitis do not develop symptoms of illness. In these cases, the dog ’ s immune system is able to contain and destroy the organisms before they can reproduce and cause disease. But when a dog is exposed to a large number of

spores or has a weakened immune system, Valley Fever can take hold. Typical symptoms of an infection that is limited to the lungs include:

Coughing

Lethargy

Fever

Poor appetite

Weight loss Additional symptoms are seen when the infection spreads outside of the lungs. Lameness is not unusual since the joints and bones are commonly affected. Seizures may develop if the brain is involved. Other possible symptoms include back or neck pain, abscesses, skin wounds that don ’ t heal as expected, swollen lymph nodes, eye abnormalities, heart failure, and more. In Arizona, it appears that the highest risk of exposure

to Coccidiodes immitis occurs during the drier months of June, July, October, and Novem- ber, but this may not be the case in other parts of the country. Symptoms of infection may occur weeks, months, or even years after the exposure has occurred. Treating Valley Fever in Dogs Dogs that have been diagnosed with Valley Fever will be given anti - fungal medications which inhibit the growth of Coccidiodes organisms and allows the dog ’ s immune system to control and hopefully eliminate the infection. Commonly used medications in- clude fluconazole, itraconazole, and ketoconazole. Other options are available for dogs with severe infections or those that don ’ t respond to traditional treatments. Veterinarians may al- so prescribe anti - inflammatory medications, pain relievers, nutritional support, fluid therapy, and other treatments based on the specifics of a dog ’ s case. Valley Fever requires long - term treatment. Dogs are typically given anti - fungal medications for at least six months to a year, but some may need extended or even life - long treatment to prevent relapses. Veterinarians determine the best time to discontinue anti - fungal medica- tions based on a dog ’ s response to treatment and follow - up testing, and then they will closely monitor for relapses.
