EMBRACE SILENCE!
Why Disconnecting From Technology Is Beneficial
Like many of you, I am a child of media. Do you remember when the Walkman cassette player came out? Or the Discman? I know I do! I used to listen to books, music, and educational pieces on these devices as soon as they were released. When we had cassette players in our vehicles, my car became my university — I couldn’t get enough! I was always learning and feeding my mind with information. I am a lifetime learner, so it’s not surprising that I was always searching for more knowledge anywhere I looked — especially within the news and the political realm.
know that, according to Pew Research Center, 64% of Americans claim that social media negatively impacts how things are going in our country today?
Additionally, several reports, like the one from WPSD Local,

shared that the Facebook algorithm is more likely to share negative posts and ads on your feed. Some of the things we see on social media can trigger us to react negatively as well. But by cutting out social media as a whole, I started to have a more positive outlook on life and more control over my mental state. While you’re bound to meet resistance when unplugging, it’s best to take baby steps. Carve out a few minutes each day to scroll
One of my coaches challenged me to add more silence to my life. I understand that being in silence, not having any background music or show on, is difficult. But focusing on your breathing and being with yourself has so many benefits. It allows you to think clearly, process your emotions, and gives you the opportunity to have control over your entire body — mentally and physically.
through social media. Or cut out social media every other day. Find a method that works for you, and stick with it!
The first step I took to incorporate silence into my life was my morning walk with my dog. I used to take this time to listen to podcasts or a book. But now, I do walking meditations. I think about the goals and ideas I have for my personal and professional life during this time.
“Incorporating silence into my life has helped me tremendously. I’m more focused than ever on my March to a Million, and I can give my time to things that add value to my life.”
Incorporating silence into my life has helped me tremendously. I’m more focused than ever on my March to a Million, and I can give my time to things that add value to my life. But it wasn’t that easy at first. It takes time to adjust to new habits and routines. Over time, things got easier, and I began to eliminate more and more distractions.
Then, I decided to take it one step further.
Before accepting my coach’s challenge, I would always watch the news. I loved to know what was happening worldwide — especially in politics. But I realized that most news coverage discusses negative topics that can cast fear and doubt in our minds. So, I challenged myself not to watch the
In honor of March 3 being National Day of Unplugging, I encourage you to disconnect from technology and embrace the amazing benefits of silence. morning news. Then, I figured I didn’t need to watch the evening or nightly news broadcast either. Even though I no longer watch these channels, I still get updates on what’s happening around me to better educate myself and my clients. Since I was on a roll of eliminating distractions and embracing silence, I decided to take it a step further and cut out social media entirely. Like the news, social media is full of negativity. JENNIFER SHORT, ESTATE PLANNING ATTORNEY STAFF SPOTLIGHT:
What do you do for the Law Offices of DuPont and Blumenstiel? I am an estate planning attorney here at the law firm. My typical work day consists of meeting with clients in person, via Zoom, or on the telephone, whichever the client prefers. Together, we decide which estate documents are needed for their individual situation. I strive to make the things people don’t like to think about — wills, trusts, and other “end-of-life” documents — simple and easy to understand. Describe your career path before you started working here. I started working here in the fall of 2021. Before that, I worked for a large national insurance company for 14 years. I handled litigation, coverage issues, and compliance. I received my Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore in 1998 and before that, my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from The Ohio State University.. What motivates you to get up and go to work? A couple of different things motivate me to get up and come to work. The main reason is the clients. I love to talk to them, hear their stories, figure out what they need, and make it happen. I’m also very inspired by volunteers — people who do what needs to be done for no particular gain. Volunteers are willing to take the time to help out a cause, their neighbor, or a loved one. That inspires me to do good work.

How to Discuss It With Your Parents Talking About Long-Term Care Is Difficult!
Did you know that about 52% of people older than 65 require long-term care services? As our parents age, they may need assistance with daily tasks or cannot care for themselves due to a mental or physical impairment. Because of this, you may have to consider long-term care services for your aging parents. But how do you start this conversation? And how do you find an assisted living organization right for them? HOW DO YOU TALK TO YOUR PARENTS ABOUT LONG-TERM CARE? Even though it can be difficult to talk about assisted living arrangements with your parents, it can be the best option for their health and well-being. However, when discussing these options, be mindful of your parents and include them in the decision. Don’t catch them off guard or make them feel like they’re being ambushed.
parent has more than enough time to process and consider the issue. Outline and inform them about the available long-term care options. Look into adult day care, in-home aides, assisted living units, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. However, if your parents show resistance or don’t want to talk about it, don’t press the issue — you can come back to the discussion again. WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD YOU ASK WHEN TOURING LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES? Keep these questions in mind when your parent is ready to discuss the topic in more detail and you want to begin touring different facilities.
•
Can your parent leave the facility for short periods? What are the dining options and activities available to residents?
•
It’s also beneficial to speak with current residents about their experience so you and your parents can get firsthand knowledge about the facility you’re looking at. Once you’ve selected a facility and it’s time to move in, talk to your loved one about what to expect from the process and offer support when needed. It’s also best to keep in close contact with the facility and your loved one to ensure their needs are met. If you have any questions about long- term care, your friends at DuPont Wealth Solutions can assist you. You can check out our long-term care and Medicaid planning guide, Aging with Confidence, at DandBLaw.LPages.co/aging-with- confidence-guide.

What services and amenities do they offer? What is the cost of residency? What are their policies on visitors, overnight guests, or pets?
• •
Instead, bring up the idea of long-term care before it’s necessary to ensure your

NEW ORLEANS, LA Once Mardi Gras concludes, all eyes are on St. Patrick’s Day in New Orleans, Louisiana. The city hosts a parade on March 11, and it’s always quite a spectacle. You’ll see the makings of Irish tradition everywhere, including cabbage, onions, and potatoes, so keep your head on a swivel. You can also head to the Irish Channel neighborhood on March 11 to attend an all-day block party. Plenty of green beer will be available at this event, so come ready to celebrate!
As we inch closer to the beginning of spring, nature around us is coming back to life. Soon, the grass and trees will return to their typical green hue if they haven’t already.
