SUMMER IS IN THE AIR
Exploring the Great Idaho Outdoors With My Family
Are you as excited for summer as we are? Around our house, we’re gearing up for some fun outdoor time with the whole family. Owen is already looking forward to our next camping trip, and Hudson may not know it yet, but he’s on his way to becoming the tiniest outdoor enthusiast in Idaho. Katie and I are excited to share this with him. Going camping is high on our list of summer activities. For Memorial Day weekend, we headed to McCall to camp and enjoy the wildlife. A weekend in the mountains is just what we need to feel refreshed and ready to take on the coming months. We like to hike, fish, bike, hang out at the beach, and just soak up the natural environment. I feel fortunate to live in a place where the mountains are so close. Our state is pretty beautiful. At the end of August, we’ll be heading out of state to watch the BSU game in Florida. Owen can’t wait to visit Disney World, and with my brother, his family, and my parents joining us, I know it’s going to be a lot of fun and a great way to bring us all together. We’re also looking forward to our Patient Appreciation Party on Aug. 2! It’s something we do every year to say thank you because we wouldn’t be here without you. You are a very important part of our
practice, and this is a day to celebrate you! Plus, it’s a fun opportunity to connect with you and your family outside of your visits.
This year, we’re renting out the entire zoo, so Ustick Dental Office patients and their families can enjoy it all to themselves. We thought the zoo would be a good choice, considering how much our family loves visiting it. Owen and Hudson are both fans of seeing the animals. We haven’t gone yet this year, but we typically go a few times every summer. Katie’s mom, Gail, takes the boys when she’s watching them, and they have a blast. Owen loves the goats, but Hudson is still a little unsure of them, as they do get pretty enthusiastic about greeting visitors! To our patients, thank you for bearing with us through our remodel. You’ll notice some great new additions when you’re here, including a beverage station. We appreciate your patience, and we hope you enjoy the updates as much as we do! I hope you have a great start to your summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the zoo on Aug. 2! Don’t forget to RSVP to save your spot! We’ll see you there!

There are many different opinions on the healthiness of snacking. Some people think of snacks as processed foods with high calories, but snacks don’t have to be junk food. Depending on what snacks you’re eating, and how often, these little in-between-meal bites can be highly beneficial or detrimental to your overall health. HEALTHY VS. UNHEALTHY SNACKS People snack when they’re hungry, but they also do it when they’re stressed, bored, or have a habit. When people snack on unhealthy junk food when they’re bored, the result is weight gain. An excellent way to avoid unhealthy snacks is to surround yourself with healthy alternatives. Fill your fridge and pantry with whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and legumes. With those in your kitchen, you’ll have plenty of healthy options to choose from when you’re hungry. WHO BENEFITS FROM SNACKING? Depending on your weight, fitness level, and medical conditions, snacking throughout the day can be more effective than eating three large meals a day. Individuals who are crunched for time, have particular health conditions, are athletic, or are trying to lose or maintain weight all benefit from healthy snacking throughout the day. People who have high cholesterol or diabetes can better maintain their cholesterol and blood glucose levels if they eat frequently during the day. For athletes, snacking helps distribute the consumption of SNACKING

nutrients their body needs throughout the day instead of all at once. This way, their energy levels stay the same instead of fluctuating with their meal times. If you find yourself in need of a quick bite, think clementines and almonds instead of chips and Pop-Tarts. You’ll still satisfy your hunger without
jeopardizing your health or increasing your waistline.

BRUSHING UP ON DENTAL CARE Tips for Better Oral Hygiene
A study conducted by the University of Adelaide recently found that orthodontic care has no direct impact on a person’s long-term dental health. In other words, just because you had braces or some other form of orthodontic treatment does not mean you can be lax about dental hygiene or regular checkups and still avoid tooth decay. Braces may leave your smile looking picturesque, but the fight for healthy teeth is fought daily. Here are a few tips for practicing proper oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Aim the brush at an angle to reach the area where the teeth and gums connect. Brush with short, back-and-forth strokes across the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. Brushes with soft bristles that can get between your molars are ideal. You should try to replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months or whenever the bristles start to fray. Store your toothbrush in a dry place where it can remain upright until your next use. When you floss, use about 18 inches of dental floss and wrap the ends around each of your middle fingers. Pinch the remaining string between your pointer fingers and thumbs. Run the floss back and
forth and up and down between two teeth at a time and be gentle around your gums. Use a different part of the floss every couple of teeth to avoid spreading bacteria.
In addition to proper brushing and flossing techniques, there are other
ways you can protect your teeth. Adding mouthwash to your plaque- fighting arsenal can remove more hard-to-reach bacteria. You should also try to avoid snacking (without brushing after) before going to bed since this will give bacteria time to feed and multiply overnight. Avoid all tobacco products and, of course, remember to schedule a dental cleaning and exam twice a year.
A lot of this might seem like common sense, but not everyone knows best practices when it comes to keeping your teeth healthy.
Patient Appreciation Event We are renting the zoo after hours. The new exhibits will be open. We will be enjoying a baked potato bar for dinner. Tickets are limited, so please call the office at 208-375-8720 to RSVP ASAP!

There’s more to Idaho than potatoes. Sitting square in the center of the Gem State is one of the largest contiguous areas of protected wilderness in the U.S. While the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area may not roll off the tongue as easy as Yellowstone or Yosemite, this 2 million-acre swath of mountains, gorges, and alpine lakes offers something for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. hot springs. Those with the right permits will find the rivers and lakes full of fishing opportunities, and the surrounding pine forests are teeming with game. LODGES? I JUST WANT TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL. For those looking for a truly unplugged experience, backpacking to the many campsites scattered throughout the region can be an incredible journey. If you spend a night beside the crystal-clear waters of Langer Lake, hundreds of miles away from any light pollution, you’ll find peace, quiet, and a sky bursting with stars. If you’ve ever wanted to experience a truly untamed part of the United States, Idaho is the hidden gem you’ve been looking for.
RIVER OF NO WHAT, NOW? The name of the wilderness may sound a little ominous at first — who wants to travel down a river of no return? — but in truth, it’s a title from times gone by when canoes and small watercraft could travel down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River swiftly but couldn’t fight the current going back up. Today, those same rapids make the Middle Fork a wildly popular whitewater rafting destination, with plenty of local and out-of-state enthusiasts making a return journey every summer.
RAFTING ISN’T FOR ME. WHAT ELSE YOU GOT? If crashing down 300 Class III rapids isn’t your speed, the Frank Church Wilderness has plenty of other ways to enjoy the wild mountain country. There are several lodges that were grandfathered in to the wilderness area, most of which are only accessible by jet boat, light aircraft, or good old-fashioned hiking. Some, like the Middle Fork Lodge, offer five-star accommodations, located conveniently close to one of the area’s many natural
