are those a woman feels in labor, the pain caused by grease burns, a spasm of angina pectoris, and the facial neu- ralegia pains causing a sudden flash of agony and keeping its victim in dread of a successive attack. Interest ing how science deals with the subject of pain. The Word of God has much to say on this matter, too. Under the in spiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul wrote the assurance of the Lord Jesus when he declared, “M y grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore w ill I rather glory in my in firmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessi ties, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I stronge” (II Corinthians 12.-9-10). * * * The man who rolls up his sleeves will seldom lose his shirt. * * * MODERN ALCHEMY Alchemists of the middle ages sought to change cheap metals into pure gold. As the dream of every selfish and greedy king there was the hope to find some such pseudo-scientific wizard who could achieve this remarkable, but yet impossible feat. Laboring long hours among their weird-shaped flasks and bottles, all the while making strange gestures and sounds, melting various mixtures together, they would carry on. Some of the more clever fakers became rich by diligent deception. Many people today try to make themselves perfect through the alchemy of self-righteousness. They practice all kinds of self-help treatments. They give to the poor, assist someone who may be having difficulty, are good to their neighbors. But as fine as these things are, none of them w ill avail for' salva tion. Perfection is not found in our selves, or in what we do to ourselves, but only in the finished work of Christ. The Bible points out that all of our righteousnesses, not our sins but our righteousnesses, are as filthy rags. They are rags because they do not cover us 26

and filthy because they merely invest us with their own disease, over and over again. There is only one way to get gold, and there is only one Way to find eternal life. The Lord Jesus Christ rightly declared, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” * * * While God provides for every little bird yet He doesn't throw it in the nest. * * * THE MATERIALIST'S TEN COMMANDMENTS 1. Thou shalt have no God, for this is an admission of weakness. 2. What thou seest, that shalt thou call God; thou shalt not worship that which thou const not see. 3. Thou shalt use the name of the Lord in ways not worshipful, for thus thou mayest effectively pro claim thine anger and express thy self most vividly. 4. Thou shalt remember the sabbath day as thine own day for pet proj ects and work, for thou art busier than God and hast no time to cease from labor. 5. Thou shalt not honor thy father and thy mother, for this is old- fashioned, a threat to thy self-ex- pressioYi, and warping to thy per sonality. 6. Thou shalt not kill the body, but thou shalt assassinate character by means of malicious gossip, and thou shalt think lightly of starving the soul of thy neighbor by with holding thy love from him. 7. Thou shalt regard marriage flip pantly for it is a bond easily brok en. 8. Thou shah not get caught stealing. 9. Thou shalt stretch the truth con cerning thy neighbor if it serves thy purpose, or if thou hast little liking for him. 10. Thou shalt covet freely, for by thy desires shalt thou live. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” “Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”
