ANDREW RAMSDEN Andrew Ramsden (1934-2013) was a Victoria Racing Club committee and board member for twenty years, Chairman from 1998 to 2003. He enthusiastically supported races for stayers, and part-owned two Melbourne Cup winners – Gurner’s Lane (1982) and Brew (2000). On his retirement the VRC renamed Flemington’s premium autumn long distance race, previously the Duke of Norfolk Stakes, in his honour. The race, originally over two miles (3218 metres), was inaugurated in 1964 following the visit to Flemington by Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk and Earl Marshall, a keen racing man and manager of the 1962-63 England cricket tour of Australia. His eldest daughter, Anne Cowdrey, Lady Herries, maintained the family’s Australian connection in 1998, training Taufan’s Melody to win the Caulfield Cup, with Harbour Dues finishing fourth in the Melbourne Cup. In 2019 The Andrew Ramsden was shortened to 2800 metres, offering the winner ballot exemption for the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
