grandmother, a Flint native, and both of my maternal grandparents lived in Flint their whole lives. As for myself, this is where I was born and raised. This is where I have made friends; attended school; met and married the love of my life, Samantha; and where we plan to raise our son, Jerome Adams III. Flint has always been my home. There are people here who genuinely want to help each other. In high school at Flint Northern, a man I knew by the name of Floyd Clack gave me a bunch of scholarship applications to help me get the money I needed for college. This act of kindness helped steer my life to where it is today. People like Floyd have helped push me to my best. When I set out to find my career, I knew I wanted to walk down a path that would allow me to return and give back to my community. In my youth, I was drawn to a career as a physician or a physical therapist. Both are fields centered around helping people, and they present the opportunity for a unique type of problem-solving. I enjoy the challenge of a new problem, and there’s no problem as worthwhile as improving a person’s health. In the health field, someone comes to you because they aren’t feeling well. It’s your job to listen to how they are feeling, figure out the cause of their grief, and devise a plan of action that will help them get well again.

Ultimately, I took the leap into physical therapy after a personal experience with a pulled hamstring and sprained ankle in my younger days. I went to physical therapy to help my recovery and realized the field was amazing. Watching my physical therapist work, I thought to myself, “I could do this all day and love it!” Physical therapy helps a person heal without drugs or surgery, and that really appealed to me. I tested the waters with a “Careers in Health” course at the Genesee Area Skill Center, where I saw what it was like to work on the PT floor, and the experience confirmed that PT was truly something I could love doing. I completed my doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Michigan Flint, and in my 10 years as a PT, I have been able to help countless people and solve plenty of problems. To be honest, one of the biggest problems I’ve tackled is balancing being a physical therapist and being a business owner. In school, I learned a lot about human anatomy and caring for patients, but I didn’t learn as much about marketing and managing a business. That said, it has been an incredible experience. In the six years since I started the practice, I’ve grown as a PT and as a person. I’ve been able to really hit the pavement and build lasting relationships with my patients, and I’ve been able to move my practice in a direction that will best help my community. It’s been a fascinating journey, and I am still just getting started.

The Secret to Incredible-Looking Leaf Crafts

It’s fall, and your Pinterest boards are full of fall crafts. You find yourself daydreaming about candles glowing in leaf-adorned jars, leafy wreaths on the front door, and a garland of leaves lending a touch of whimsy to the dining room. Colorful fall leaves are the secret to a home that’s perfectly decorated for the season, but how do experienced crafters find leaves that last? If you just grab a handful from your backyard, in a few weeks, your painstaking project has dried up and you’re stuck vacuuming leaf bits out of your carpet. It’s time to step up your crafting game and learn the trick to preserving leaves for years to come. Before you go out hunting for the perfect leaves, grab a few newspapers. After you’ve gathered up all your favorite leaves, place them in a single layer on a newspaper page. When choosing your leaves, make sure they are still fresh and flat. Leaves that are already dried or curling cannot be preserved well enough to use as decorations. If your leaves are damp, gently dry them off before putting them on the newspaper. Make sure none of the leaves touch What It Takes to Be a Step Above WHY HOR I ZON? There are almost 125,000 physical therapy establishments treating patients across the United States today. The industry is growing, with new physical therapists getting their licenses and new clinics opening every day. But physical therapy clinics aren’t like a McDonald’s franchise. You can’t go to a PT in New York and expect the same treatment as you would get from a PT in Idaho. In fact, even the various PT clinics in Flint are not carbon copies of each other. At Horizon, we believe no two injuries are exactly alike, regardless of how similar they seem. Likewise, no two patients are the same. So, why should treatment plans be the same? Experienced PTs work hard to create recovery programs that are unique to a patient’s needs. A person’s health and recovery are too important to be left in the hands of aides still learning the ropes. Every PT on the team has advanced training in various areas, including Clinical Instructor Level, McKenzie Treatment. With this level of experience, we’re able to treat the root cause of a patient’s pain, rather than just surface-level symptoms.

each other. Set a few more pages of newspaper on top and add enough weight to keep them flat. Heavy books are ideal for this. Move the newspaper somewhere it can sit undisturbed and leave your leaves alone for at least two weeks. Just letting your leaves dry flat isn’t enough for decorations that last. The true secret to leaf preservation is an all-in-one glue, sealer, and finish such as Mod Podge. This is a popular tool for decoupage projects, and it belongs in every craft closet. Once your leaves are dry, gently coat one side of each leaf in a layer of Mod Podge. Place your leaves on a sheet of wax paper and wait for them to dry. This should take less than an hour. When the Mod Podge is dry, turn the leaves over and coat the other side. Repeat with a second coat on each side. Mod Podge brings the bright colors back to your leaves and makes them more flexible. They’ll look like they just fell off the tree! These leaves will last for years, and you are free to craft to your heart’s content. THAT SMARTS! 4 Painful Facts About Physical Pain Let’s set the record straight: Pain is normal. Seventy-five million people in the United States face chronic or recurrent pain every year. But despite how common pain is, we still know little about it. Here are five facts you didn’t know about pain. 1. Scientists Don’t Understand Pain While pain is often the direct result of an obvious injury, sometimes pain is caused by damaged nerves, which are more difficult to pinpoint. As Kathryn Weiner, director of the American Academy of Pain Management, explains, “Pain is complex and defies our ability to establish a clear definition. Pain is a complex mixture of emotions,

3. Women Feel More Pain

A 2005 study for the Pain Management Unit at the University of Bath found women have 34 nerve fibers per square centimeter of facial skin. Meanwhile, men average just 17. Basically, women feel pain in more areas of their body for longer periods of time. 4. Back Pain Is the Most Common Pain Condition A survey from the National Institutes of Health found 26 million Americans suffer from back pain. Almost twice as many Americans suffer from back pain than migraines. Annually, we spend around $50 billion on back pain relief. What does all this mean? To start, everyone experiences pain differently. There are paths to overcoming pain, but they require patience, diligence, and the right experts on your side.

culture, experience, spirit, and sensation.” 2. Chronic Pain Shrinks the Brain

Research from Northwestern University found people with chronic backache have brains that are 11 percent smaller than individuals who don’t suffer from pain. What’s worse, experts aren’t sure why. “It is possible it’s just the stress of having to live with the condition. The neurons become overactive or tired of the activity,” suggests A. Vania Apkarian of Northwest University.

Thanksgiving’s Famous Balloons

Iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day PARADE BALLO O NS

T hanksgiving is a holiday full of traditions, from turkey and stuffing to football and naps. Since 1924,

influence on the parade is so immense, however, that when Macy’s brought him back in 2016 for the parade’s 90th anniversary, they recreated his original design. Without Felix’s debut, the parade might look a lot different today. Snoopy When it comes to balloon characters, none is more famous than the classic “Peanuts” beagle. His first balloon floated through the sky in 1968, and he’s been a regular fixture ever since. Charles Schultz’s famous pooch holds the record for most variations in a parade (eight) and most total appearances (40). Though Snoopy doesn’t come out every year, he usually closes the show when he does. Pikachu The Pokémon mascot didn’t appear until 2001, but he’s become a star attraction, showing up every year since. Bright, expressive, and impossible to miss, Pikachu checks off all the boxes for a successful balloon character. For 16 years, those who predicted that Pokémon was just a fad have gotten a big, yellow reminder of just how wrong they were.

the Macy’s Parade has grown to become not only a Thanksgiving staple but also the

world’s largest parade. Over 3.5 million people attended the parade last year, with another 20 million tuning in from home. The main attraction is always the massive character balloons, which first graced the skies in 1927. Over the decades, some of these balloons have become nearly as famous as the character they depict. Felix the Cat When the Felix the Cat balloon appeared in 1931, it set the standard for all characters to follow. Sadly, the original balloon got tangled in wires and caught on fire, so it has been lost to history. Felix’s
