On behalf of Dr. Copeland, Dr. Hanna, and myself, I wanted to wish each of you a happy New Year. For me, a new year is always a bittersweet proposition. On one hand, we have so many big moments ahead, and on the other, we are leaving behind some of those same milestones, from losing a first tooth to losing the training wheels on a bike. Though it’s easy to be nostalgic for yesteryear, I am extremely excited for what’s yet to come. Professionally, we are equally excited about not only moving into the new facility this spring, but also the new advances and technologies another year will bring. Even as I write this, we are using digital technology and processes not available back in 2021. I wanted to continue the tradition of passing along the Top Medical Innovations of the past year, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Below, you can read more directly from the Cleveland Clinic’s top advancements from 2022. I wish each and every one of you a wonderful new year full of health, wellness, and prosperity! Dr. Jones Here, in order of anticipated importance, are the Top 10 Medical Innovations from the past year. 1. Next Generation of mRNA Vaccinology This landscape-changing technology has the potential to manage some of health care’s most challenging diseases quickly and efficiently, from certain cancers to Zika virus. 2. PSMA-Targeted Therapy in Prostate Cancer When detected early by PSMA PET scans, recurrent prostate cancer can be treated through a targeted approach with stereotactic body radiation therapy, surgery, and/or systemic therapy. 3. New Treatment for the Reduction of LDL Inclisiran is an injectable, small interfering RNA that targets the PCSK9 protein. In contrast to statins, it requires infrequent dosing (twice per year) and provides effective and sustained LDL-C reduction.

MIND OVER MATTER ISN’T ENOUGH! USE THE MIND-MUSCLE CONNECTION
Visualize the muscles you are using. Every time you move, whether using a stationary bike, taking a walk, or lifting weights in a gym, picture the muscles you’re using in your head. Imagine the muscle fibers stretching and contracting with each movement. Use cues to remind you of your working muscles. Sometimes, our minds drift off during a workout, and that’s normal. But if you find your head in the clouds more often than you’re thinking about your exercise, it might be time to use a few cues. A cue simply reminds you of what you’re physically doing. One way to incorporate a cue is to talk to yourself with each repetition. For example, if you’re performing a bench press, you can say “up” when you push the bar away and “down” when you lower it toward you. Utilize time under tension. The slower you perform your exercise, the more opportunity your brain has to talk to those muscles you’re using. Try holding each repetition for three seconds before moving on to the next, and as you hold, visualize those muscles for the entire three seconds.
Many assume working out is the muscle’s job, pushing weights around as we enjoy a song or listen to a podcast. While this may be a fun way to pass the time, you’re not doing your fitness any favors with your mind elsewhere. When you work out, you should use a “mind-muscle connection,” or purposely think about the movement and contractions of your muscles as you use them. This is better because when your brain consciously focuses on your muscles and their contractions, it employs more muscle fibers to complete the task. You build strength in a more complete, well-rounded way.
If you’re not using a mind-muscle connection yet, don’t worry! Here’s how you can start next time you’re ready to sweat.
Turn off distractions. Remember the music or podcast we mentioned earlier? Turn it off! This also includes silencing your phone or turning off any nearby TVs. It may take some time to get used to working out in silence, but with nowhere else to wander, the brain has an easier time focusing on those muscle movements.

7 HOME REMEDIES FOR NAGGING TOOTHACHES A Pain in the Mouth!
Apply a peppermint tea bag. A peppermint tea bag — either warm or cold — can help relieve your toothache and reduce inflammation. Just make sure it isn’t too hot or too cold before applying it to the irritated area. Rinse with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide targets inflammation and bacteria in your mouth, which helps with pain. Swish with one part hydrogen peroxide and two parts water. Make a garlic paste. Garlic is a natural pain reliever, and it combats bacteria. Crush up some garlic cloves, make a paste, then apply it to the sore area!
If you’ve ever experienced tooth pain, you know how frustrating it can be. Pain can range from a minor annoyance to severe and disruptive if it keeps you up at night and distracts you from your work. And depending on your situation, you may not be able to get in to see a dentist immediately. To nip the pesky pain in the bud right away, you may wonder if any at-home solutions can tide you over before making it to your dentist. Thankfully, here are seven methods to alleviate tooth pain without a dentist. Elevate your head. When you twist your ankle, you know to prop it up on a pillow and get some rest. This is because when your ankle is in a flat position, gravity increases blood pressure in that area. The same is true for a toothache. If you’re trying to sleep through the pain, prop your head up on some pillows or position yourself in an upright chair! Apply ice. Just like you ice a sports injury, you can ice your toothache. Whether you hold ice water in your mouth for many seconds
at a time or wrap ice or a bag of frozen peas in a towel and apply it to the irritated area, it should help alleviate your oral pain. Take some medicine. Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin will target your pain and reduce the inflammation in your mouth and teeth. Be sure to take the correct recommended dosage.
Rinse with salt water. Saltwater rinses are great for
oral health — they dislodge food particles and substances stuck to your teeth and can also reduce inflammation! Mix 1/2 teaspoon salt with warm water and gargle it to reduce pain.

FETA CHICKEN BURGERS
Ingredients
• 1/4 cup finely chopped cucumber • 1/4 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise BURGERS: • 1/2 cup chopped roasted sweet red pepper
• 1 tsp garlic powder • 1/2 tsp Greek seasoning • 1/4 tsp black pepper • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground chicken • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese • 6 whole wheat hamburger buns, split and toasted
Directions
1. Preheat broiler and mix chopped cucumber and mayonnaise. 2. For the burgers, mix the red pepper, garlic powder, Greek seasoning, and black pepper. Add chicken and cheese; mix lightly but thoroughly (the mixture will be sticky). Shape into 6 patties about 1/2-inch thick. 3. Broil burgers, remembering to cook both sides thoroughly. Serve on buns with cucumber sauce. If desired, top with lettuce and tomato. Enjoy!

ALL ABOARD! KNOW YOUR CRUISE ETIQUETTE BEFORE SETTING SAIL
Don’t be a chair hog. Everyone wants a prime spot on the sundeck, but you’ve got to rise early in the morning to get one. That’s fine if you can manage it, but “saving” a seat by putting a towel on it and then wandering away for breakfast or a mani-pedi is the best way to get on your fellow travelers’ bad side. Your cruise may also have a policy against it. Going to the bathroom is one thing; you’re only human. Otherwise, if you want the seat, stay in it. Be on time. Treat your cruise ship like an airplane — if you’re not on time, it’s probably leaving without you. And if you are lucky enough to have the ocean liner wait, your fellow passengers won’t look at you kindly. Set your watch to ship time (not local time) and prepare to be back an hour before the deadline. That way, if you happen to be late, you’ll still be on time. You may miss out on an extra drink or souvenir shop, but nothing will ruin your cruise faster than being left behind at the dock.
After a slump in 2020 and 2021, cruises are back in a big way. If you’re planning your first onboard adventure — or it’s been a while since you last set sail — now is the time to brush up on your cruise ship etiquette. Every passenger should read their cruise line’s policies to ensure they know all the specifics before climbing aboard. In the meantime, we’ve listed some of the most essential do’s and don’ts for the savvy traveler.
Know what to wear. Some cruise lines aim for a fancy
atmosphere, while others prefer a casual approach. Ideally, review the dress policy before you book your trip. Bring at least one formal outfit in your luggage for dinner, which tends to have an upscale vibe. The rest of your cruise wear should be casual but tasteful, leaving you looking put together. Most importantly, don’t overpack — the stateroom is smaller than you think.
