How Hays Travel started In 1980, with no industry experience and only a desk at the back of his mum’s children’s wear shop in Seaham, County Durham; John Hays got his travel business off the ground. Some 40 years later, Hays Travel is now the UK’s largest independent travel agent and recognised as a Sunday Times’ 100 Best Companies to work for in the UK. How the Hays Travel Homeworking Division works John strongly believed that from equally humble beginnings many other successful businesses can be built. With this in mind, the Homeworking Division was formed in 1997. It was designed to help experienced travel professionals have the support of a large travel industry organisation to help support drive their business forward. In addition, the business identified the desire for non-travel professionals to pursue a new career, a change of direction from their everyday lives and move into the Travel Industry. Our Academy – New to Travel product was born, and this model supports the Non Travel professionals with an entry into the Travel sector with full Training and ongoing support with all the tools you need to drive the business forward. A key ingredient to the Homeworking Division success is our passion for travel and people; as an independent travel agent with over 40 years of experience, we have real
insight into the business. With a dedicated Operations and Business Development team, we can offer a personal service tailored just to you. Alongside this support, our Head office team in Social media are on hand to offer Training and guidance on how to drive sales through your Social channels. ABTA and ATOL bonding On joining the Hays Homeworking Division you’ll be issued with a ABTA number, meaning that you’ll receive financial protection and peace of mind for your clients; as well as the added credibility of being part of the UK’s most recognised and respected travel associations. We are responsible for the bonding and membership costs, so you don’t have to worry. However, we’ll expect you to adhere to the ABTA code of conduct at all times.

Good quality travel insurance with low nett rates Our travel insurance is provided by a market- leading supplier at extremely competitive rates, whilst fully compliant with the FCA. More time to Sell and less time spent on admin We like to make sure we’re supporting you in developing your business and increasing sales. One way of doing this is to provide smooth, efficient, and automated administration. Our supplier payments team pay and reconcile all payments to tour operators and insurance providers on your behalf; allowing you to maintain a high level of service for your clients. You take responsibility for the client’s administration; such as sending tickets and confirmations and ensuring payments are made on time. Our selling systems platform houses all client administration facilities.
Excellent commercial terms with tour operators As an independent organisation; we trade with industry-bonded tour operators large and small, across the whole spectrum; including Short haul, Long Haul, Cruise, UK , Ski, and more. We also offer access to our in house ATOL protected Hays Tour Operator and exclusive hotel and transfer rates via our own Hays subsidiaries – Hays Beds and Hays Transfers. RUN BY TRAVEL PEOPLE FOR TRAVEL PEOPLE
Bespoke training We provide a full training induction for every member joining hays Homeworking. Your training plan will be bespoke to the Homeworking model selected and will be Virtual from the comfort of your own home. You will leave feeling confident about all of our systems and procedures, and there will always be support following your Induction training should you have any further queries or questions. During training, you’ll really get to grips with the search and book systems, the Tour Operators and Suppliers we use along with operational procedures and how to’s and meeting key departments and individuals you will be working with.
Head Office Operations We have a centralised operations team based in our Sunderland head office. The team are just a phone call, live chat or email away and they’ll do everything they can to help with your questions or queries. Whether you are a new or existing member; the team are dedicated to supporting you and building excellent relationships with all of our members. Finance & Commission Payments Our finance team provide support on any financial queries you may have; this could be anything from transactions to commissions. You have access to a number of reporting systems to view your sales and commissions daily.
Business Development Our Business Development Coaches all have extensive travel backgrounds in a number of different roles, many whom have worked for Hays for many years. We believe that there is nothing better than the personal touch; so they will be on hand to guide you through your journey as a Hays Homeworker every step of the way. All bookings are fully ATOL protected and come with 24-hour support for your customers. Do I need to have a Travel background?
Do you offer payment plans for the Academy New to Travel offering? Yes we can offer payment plans up to 24 months – meaning the membership would cost £400 incl VAT for 24 months. How long does Training take? Our Experienced Travel professional Induction training is one week. Our Academy New to Travel Induction is two weeks and our Academy New to Travel, Leads Supported model is three weeks. What is the benefit of joining Hays Travel Homeworking Division? Hays Travel is the largest travel agent in the UK and therefore you will benefit from the buying power we have and lucrative commercial deals. You will also benefit from the brand equity throughout the UK and much more. We will be able to help you all the way, so with your commitment and the Hays Travel Homeworking models, everything is in place for a successful future.

Is there any out-of-hours support? Absolutely, many of our departments are open well into the evening and on weekends; we are on hand to help and support you. What happens when I go on holiday? We have a customer service team who can help with bookings and queries on existing bookings whilst you are away. How much can I earn? That is entirely up to you, the more you put in the more you get out. The earning potential is unlimited. Our top salespeople all say that they make more now, than they ever could working in a branch/call centre. Several of our homeworkers’ profit was over £100k last year, of which they receive 60%. Are there monthly management fees? The Academy New to Travel Models have no monthly management fee for the first 12 months. The fee will then be £55 per month. The Experienced Travel Professional PTC Models, the management fee is £55 per month.
Our Experienced Travel Professional model is for those that have at least 2 years UK Travel Agency Experience that has been within the last 5 years. However our New to Travel Academy is for those that have no Travel experience at all or have been out of the Industry for some time. Can I choose my own hours? You choose the hours that you work, our self-employed packages are completely flexible. It’s your business, so the more hours you put in, the more you get out. Is there a minimum sales value? There are no sales values put in place for you. What you achieve is simply down to you and how much hard work you put in. How long will it take to be up and running? Once we receive your signed consultancy agreement, we can have you up and running in four to six weeks. What kind of support will I receive?
