FEBRUARY 2023

I’m not too humble to say it: I cook really good spaghetti. My secret is the Italian sausage in the sauce, and for years my husband, Dave, raved about how tasty it was. Then he gave up meat to go vegan — and I stopped making my spaghetti. I feared it wouldn’t be the same with a meat alternative. What if I didn’t cook the fake meat the right way? What if Dave didn’t like it anymore? These worries held me back for a long time, but this winter, I threw caution to the winds and finally tried it. I bought vegan meatballs, doctored a canned pasta sauce, and poured it over a bowl of just-cooked noodles. FINDING LOVE IN A BOWL OF SPAGHETTI MY BIG THOUGHTS ON SMALL GESTURES

There’s nothing wrong with the grand romantic gestures you see in the movies. But if I had to choose between getting a five-star dinner one time and a hug any minute I needed one, I’d always pick the hugs. These small gestures are our way of showing each other that we care, appreciate each other, and know each other’s needs well enough to fill them without being told. The ability to do that can make or break a relationship — and I also think it can make or break a good lawyer. Of course, you want your lawyer to make the big gesture (win your case), but you also want them to make the little gestures (get to know you, ask about your family, and genuinely care about how you feel). Without the second thing, the first thing feels a little hollow. Everyone deserves to be seen and understood as a person, not just a case file! I think judges and juries understand this more than we realize. Over the years, I’ve found that our cases are more successful when my team and I get to know our clients and paint a vivid picture of their lives. It makes sense: If you were on a jury, you’d probably feel sympathy for a woman who broke her foot during a rear-end collision. But you’d likely feel more if you knew she was a single mom who, when her car was in the shop, cared more about getting her son to football practice than making it to her doctor’s appointments. At Emery Law Office, my team tries to be a “Dave” in our clients’ lives. We want to get to know you so we can solve your problems before you know you have them. We strive to make you feel appreciated, cared for, and heard.

I was worried it would taste like a shoe. But Dave LOVED it! He raved about his bowl of vegan spaghetti just as much as he used to praise the meat version. Dave and I aren’t a flowers and chocolates type of couple. Instead, our relationship is built on little gestures

Hopefully, we’ve managed to do that for you if you've worked with us. Whether we did it right or messed up, I’d love to hear

your story! You can call or email any time to tell me about your experience. Every bit of feedback helps us get better.

Wishing you all the hugs you need this Valentine’s Day,

— like how much he always talks up my cooking. I love that Dave pumps my gas in the wintertime, encourages me to take naps when I look tired, and never questions my shoe purchases. (A few months ago, we took a trip to Phoenix

and I decided to pop into Gucci. When I came out with a bag, he didn’t even blink!)

INSTEAD OF PURCHASING FOAMING SOAPS

CREATE YOUR OWN WITH JUST 3 INGREDIENTS

We’ve all seen the foaming hand and dish soaps at our local supermarkets — some of you may have one by your sink or in a cabinet. But when you run out of soap, what do you do? Do you throw out the bottle and purchase a new one? Or do you buy a new bottle and attach it to the dispenser? Buying soap replacements all the time is costly, but you can save money and soap by creating your own foaming dish and hand soap! You only need three things: a foaming dispenser, liquid soap, and water. Is making your own foaming soap that easy? Yes! The entire process may take you only five minutes to complete. The most important item you need is a foam dispenser. You can reuse a foaming soap container or purchase one online. After rinsing your bottle, add one part liquid soap and three parts water. Avoid shaking the bottle after screwing the cap back on. The suds and bubbles in the container will affect the dispenser and produce less foam when you pump the device. YOUR FEBRUARY INSURANCE TO-DO LIST IS YOUR CAR REALLY FULLY COVERED?

And that’s it! You just created foaming hand or dish soap in seconds. You don’t need to add lots of liquid soap to your concoction. If you look at foaming soaps in the supermarket, you will notice that it’s mostly water. So, less is more in this instance.

Once you begin making these, you’ll notice that you use less soap, making the product last longer and keeping more money in your pocket.

Not only does this foaming method work for hand and dish soaps, but you can also make your shampoo, body wash, and other cleansers foam — it’s all about the dispenser. If you decide to convert other products, avoid creamy soaps because they have moisturizers that can clog the foaming dispenser. Once you start making your own foaming soap, you will never go back to purchasing them. This DIY method is easy, quick, and inexpensive. Happy cleaning!

have a PIP deductible. The PIP deductible costs you money without providing any extra benefits. Scrap it! If you don’t live in Kentucky, check to ensure you have Med- Pay instead of PIP. 3. Check that you have uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist

Why? Well, imagine you own a 2007 Ford Taurus and have a $1,000 deductible on your collision coverage. Because the car is only worth $1,500- $2,000, it’s wiser to save up the $500-$1,000 you’d need to pay out of pocket if your car were totaled than it is to pay $200 per month for coverage. The coverage will quickly cost more than you’ll ever get back from the insurance company. If any of this legalese is confusing, don’t worry — our team will walk you through it for free! Whether you’re a client or not, you can call our office at any time for a free review of your policy.

Feb. 1 is Car Insurance Day, and in its honor, we have a question for you: Are you really, truly, 100% sure that you’re fully covered and that you’re spending your insurance dollars wisely? If not, we’re here to help. We put together a handy to-do list you can use to double-check your car insurance. Feel free to share it with friends and family. It’s better to be safe than sorry! 1. Make sure you have an active policy. Just because you purchased car insurance once doesn’t mean you’re still covered. Pull out your paperwork or look up your policy online to double-check. 2. If you live in Kentucky, make sure you have Personal Injury Protection coverage but do NOT

(UM/UIM) coverage that is at least as robust as your liability coverage. As Melissa likes to say, “You should protect yourself and your family at least as well as you protect the people you might hurt.” 4. Double-check that your collision and comprehensive coverage amounts make sense. To do this, we recommend comparing the value of your vehicle to the cost of your deductible. If your deductible is more than your car or truck is worth, or if the two numbers are close, you’re better off adding money to a savings account each month instead of paying for coverage.

BARKS FROM BELLA Meet My Valentine’s Sweetie

HAVE A LAUGH!

A while ago, my grandma and grandpa moved to what Dad calls an “assisted living facility.” Everyone was sad at first, but then things turned around when I found my new sweetie! It happened at Grandma and Grandpa’s old house. I was helping Dad clean the house so that Grandma and Grandpa could sell it. He was digging around in boxes, and I did my part by sniffing under the sofa and pulling out everything I could find. That’s when

INGREDIENTS

I discovered something small, fuzzy, and yellow — a toy! It smelled just like

• • •

2 eggs

• •

1/2 cup dried cranberries 3–4 tbsp coconut flour

1 1/2 cups almond flour

Grandma and Grandpa’s cat, Sadie.

1 tbsp coconut oil

Sadie was an old lady when I met her, and I still miss her not being around. I fell in love with the toy right away. It looks like a ducky, but it’s about the same size as a mole. It even squeaks! I knew I could use it to practice my mole hunting. I carried the toy over to Dad and dropped it at his feet. Then I gave him my best puppy eyes and whined, “Can I keep it? Oh, Dad, can I keep it, please?! I’ll be the best mole hunter in the whole neighborhood!”

DIRECTIONS

WE WANT YOU TO THINK OF US AS YOUR LAW FIRM. If you have a legal matter that needs attention, let us know. If we can’t handle the matter, we will refer you to a firm that can. Please feel free to refer us to your friends and family for their legal needs. We welcome the opportunity to help. 6. Roll out dough and cut treats using bite-size cookie cutters. Tip: Sprinkle a little coconut flour on top of your dough to keep it from sticking to the cookie cutters. 7. On a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, place your treats. Bake for 15–18 minutes or until crisp. Let cool before giving to your pooch! 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. 2. In a small bowl, beat eggs and set aside. 3. In a separate bowl, combine almond flour, coconut oil, and dried cranberries. 4. Once combined, pour in eggs and mix with your hands. (The dough will be very wet.) 5. Add coconut flour 1 tbsp at a time; mix well after each addition. You want to achieve a consistency that is easy to roll, is not super sticky, and easily forms a ball.

He said yes! It wasn’t even hard to convince him!

Since I brought my sweetie home, I’ve been practicing my mole hunting nonstop. I can toss the ducky around myself, but it’s even better when Mom and Dad throw it for me. Then, I can pretend that it’s running away, chase it down, and kill it like a real mole! It’s hard to hunt moles in the winter because the ground is hard, and they like to stay hidden. But thanks to my sweetie, I’ll be ready when the weather is nice again. Mom and Dad are going to be so happy! They love it when I get rid of the moles for them, and now I’ll be faster than ever.

I hope you have someone (or something) you love as much as I love my ducky. Happy mole-hunting!

-Bella

5 FEEL-GOOD MOVIES TO CHASE AWAY THE BLUES

Are you stuck in a TV rut and starting to feel down in the dumps? (Thanks, seasonal depression.) If so, check out one of these heartwarming movies for a pick-me-up. 1. ‘Rescued by Ruby’ — If your family loves dogs, this kid-friendly flick will be a real crowd-pleaser. It stars a pup named Ruby, who starts life as a shelter dog. After a state trooper rescues her, she becomes a search-and-rescue worker who finds and saves people. A true story inspired the uplifting tale, and according to some reviews, you may want to have tissues ready. 2. ‘Yes Day ’ — Imagine spending an entire day saying “yes” to everything your kids requested. Congratulations: You’ve stepped into the plot of “Yes Day”! In this film, parents Alison and Carlos go along with their kids’ wildest desires and watch family bonding magic unfold. The Raising Children Network recommends this movie for adults and older kids only. 3. ‘Chickenhare and the Hamster of Darkness’ — The plot of this animated movie is as creative as its title! It follows a cartoon hero named Chickenhare, who is 50% rabbit, 50% bird, and 100% confused about his place in the world. He’s also on a quest with friends to defeat his evil uncle before it's

too late. Think of the film as a funny, adventurous, family- friendly take on the

classic tale “The Ugly Duckling.”

4. ‘Dumplin’ ’ — Mashable called “Dumplin’” “the definition of sweet.” The movie stars Rosie (played by Jennifer Aniston) as a pageant-obsessed former beauty queen whose daughter, Willowdean, doesn’t fit conventional beauty standards. When Willowdean enters her mom’s pageant in a protest complete with dancing and Dolly Parton tunes, she sparks a small-town revolution. This movie is recommended for children ages 13 and up. 5. ‘We Can Be Heroes’ — Since its release in 2020, this superhero movie has quickly become a family favorite. The story opens with an aliens-versus- superheroes showdown, and when the aliens win and take the heroes hostage, their kids come to the rescue. As the title implies, the film will leave you feeling like you can be a hero, too.
