Looking Ahead In Christian Ed ________________________

ed ited b y M a rga r e t dacobsen 9 M ..4. Associate professor of Christian Education, Biola We would like to repeat Psalm 100 for them. (Places body of church on foundation. Then Primary children repeat the Psalm.) Primary Girl: All the people who come to our Sunday school are like the roof. (Children sing We Give Thee But Thine Own, Hymns for Junior Worship.) Primary Boy: I w an t to put the Steeple on this church. It is like a m issionary sign rem inding us that ou r gifts h elp boys and girls in other lands. Teacher: The Primary children seem to love God’s house and come every Sunday to hear more about Jesus Christ. (Processional to Onward Christian Soldiers.) Teacher: This willingness to give has been marked in a prayer of David in First Chronicles 29:10-14. (Junior children repeat this passage.) Teacher: The people of God were preparing to build a temple for God. They had the same spirit that Junior boys and girls have today when they sing, What Can I Give Jesus? Teacher: Now just what have we learned today? First Junior: The Nursery depart ment child learns that JESUS IS MY FRIEND, SO I GIVE. Second Junior: The Kindergarten department child leams that GOD SHARES WITH ME, SO I SHARE WITH OTHERS. Third Junior: The Primary de partment child leams that MY CHURCH GIVES TO ME, SO I GIVE TO MY CHURCH. Fourth Junior: The Junior depart ment child leams that GOD COM MANDS GIVING, SO I GIVE GLADLY. Teacher: Some people refuse to obey. We must realize that God has giyen us so many things, that we should love to serve Him. Through Christ, we have the gift of eternal life. He gave all for us, so how can we give any less back to Him? The Pastor may close with a few remarks. Then a congregational song and closing prayer would be the fin ishing touch on your Children’s Day Program.

A Children's Day Program by Thelma Bain H ere is another workable pro gram for your idea file. June is the month for Children’s Day programs, so start now to have the children and Sunday school teachers in your church prepare for the event. The best way to begin is to get acquainted, so a few words of wel come by the Sunday school superin tendent would be appropriate. He may present the theme, which is Giving to God. Now the program begins. All the children sit with their teachers, and as they start the teachers will call their names as if taking the regular class roll. The children are asked to stand as they give their reports. Teacher: In our class we have been studying about people who had something- to give. They wanted God to use it to help others, so they found different ways to give some thing to Him. Junior Boy: I like the story of the boy who went to hear Jesus talk on the mountain-side. When the Lord Jesus told the disciples to look for something to eat, that boy offered to let Jesus have his lunch of five barley loaves and two fishes. Jesus took this gift and it fed 5,000 people. (John 6:1-14.) Junior Girl: I like the story about the people who brought gifts of jew elry and beautiful cloth to be used in the new tabernacle church. They were willing to make it look nice with their gifts. (Ex. 25:1-9; 35:1-29.) Junior Boy: My favorite story is about a man who asked for money at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple. He was lame and couldn’t work, so he asked for some money to buy some food. But Peter gave him some thing more valuable than physical food. He pointed him to God and soon he was walking and praising God. Teacher: That man who praised God in the temple would have been happy here. It seems to me that we have happy boys and girls here every

Sunday, and they sing because they’re happy! Junior Girl: Nursery Superintend ent, what do children who are two and three know about giving? (As she speaks, nursery children enter room to appropriate music.) Nursery Superintendent: We can sing to God. We like these songs: Dear Jesus, I Leva you . . . I’m Sing ing to You, My Best Friend is Jesus, and I’m Giving. (Available in Patty Sings, Scripture Press.) Teacher: I think the children in that department are singing because Jesus loves them, and they are learn ing to give as He does. Junior Boy: Kindergarten Superin tendent, what do four and five-year- old children have to give? (Proces sional of Kindergarten children to music of A ll Things Bright and Beautiful.) Kindergarten Superintendent: I think we will sing a prayer, for there are some songs that show how we can share His goodness to us. (Children sing Father W e Thank Thee, What God Tells Us, and Jesus’ Helper. Found in Beginners Sing, Scripture Press.) Teacher: Those children seem to know that “ Every good gift, and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father.” (Procession of Primary children to music of Adeste Fidelis.) Primary Superintendent: We have been studying about our church dur ing the last few months. We have decided that it gives to us in many ways, so we want to givfe to our church. Primary Boy: Our church is built on Jesus Christ. Without Him there would be no church on this comer. I place this foundation on the chart to show His place in our church. (Primary children sing In The Tem ple from The Call To Praise, Rode- heaver Hall-Mack.) Primary Girl: Our church 1 is op erated by our leaders, the pastor, the Sunday school officers and teachers. They are like the walls of a house; without them it would collapse.
