YOUNG PEOPLE continued An ancient house and a noble name, An honest heart and a spotless fame, By the viper’s sting and the demon of play, Shall be blighted and lost forever and aye. A wrong philosophy of life results often times in gambling. Some people seem to think that gambling is a “ get rich quick” scheme. It is -— for the racketeer. But nothing can make a bigger fool faster than a gambling den. Others apparently think that the world owes them a living, for getting that the Word of God clearly states that a man earns his living by the sweat of his brow (Gen. 3:19). The Greatest Gamble of All The gambling instinct seems to be latent in all men, and especially in those without Christ. Multitudes are gambling with their soul, or at least, they suppose they are gambling with their soul. Here is a man who says, “ I w ill take my chances with the rest; if I go to hell, I go to hell, and that’s that!” I have had this told me many times. What a tragedy! No sinner is taking his chances on going to hell; there is no question about his going there! Every soul without Christ is hell-bent (John 1:12; 3:36; 5:24; Acts 4:12; Rom. l:18f). I Gambling with eternity is the greatest “ gamble” because it is played for the high est stakes (Mark 8:36). Our Saviour tells D. L. Moody is said to have once re turned from a meeting with a report of "two-and-a-half conversions." "Two adults and a child, I suppose?" queried his host. "No; two children and an adult," said Mr. Moody. "The children gave their whole lives. The adult had only half of his left to give." — Driftwood. us in the verse just indicated that a man’s soul is his most priceless possession. It is worth more to him than the entire world. Would that every sinner could see this; surely he would then flee to the Saviour for His salvation so freely offered in the gospel. Gambling with the soul is the greatest “ gamble” because the highest price has been paid for that soul (1 Peter 1:18,19). No gambling casino in the world has ever dealt with such a priceless thing as the blood of Christ. There is not enough gold in the universe to pay for Calvary. Yet how lightly men treat their souls! Gambling with the soul is the greatest “ gamble” because it results in the greatest tragedy. Christ died to save the sinner from hell. The sophisticated world does not believe in hell but man’s unbelief does not change the truth. There is a hell to shun and a heaven to gain or else the Saviour would never have come. The cross itself proves that there is a hell for sinners. Christ warned men to flee from the fires of hell (Matt. 5:20-30; 25:46). The Apostle pleaded with men to turn from judgment unto Christ (Rom. l:18f; Acts 20:31; 2 Thess. 1:7-9; Heb. I 10:26-31).
