SUNDAY SCHOOL continued tioch to “ spy out our liberties” (w . 4 ,5 ). In other words, they had no time for that sort of teaching that would tend to com promise the pure grace of God. In verse 6, Paul makes it clear that the leaders of the church at Jerusalem and the apostles there did not add anything to what he already knew as one called to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. This fact tended to prove to the Galatians his independent apostleship. He had been authorized by God in his ministry. Fur thermore, the leaders at Jerusalem were clearly able to see that unto Paul had been definitely committed the responsibil ity of preaching to the Gentiles, even as to Peter was committed the duty of min istering to the circumcision (w . 7,8 ). This seems to strike at the foundation of the Roman Catholic fiction that the church is founded upon the Apostle Peter. The church among the Gentiles is the fruit of Paul’s labors, not Peter’s. The leaders in Jerusalem recognized the place of Paul in the plan of God for the church and readily approved it and “ gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship” (v. 9). A reminder was also given to Paul and his companions to give place to the practical side of the faith, namely, the care of the poor (v. 10). A Summary of the Christian Life w . 19-21 The Christian life is not the observance of rites and ceremonies or any such thing. As Dr. C. I. Scofield has said, it is “ the outliving of the inliving Christ” . To try to mix law and grace, Paul says, is to “ frustrate the grace of God” (v. 21). It is to cast reflections upon the death of Christ. Helps for the Children Putting Jesus1 Way First Gal. 2 Memory Verse: "A new commandment I give unto you. That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another" (John 13:34). The several churches in Galatia knew and loved the great missionary, Paul. Paul dearly loved these Christians and desired that in every part of their lives they should honor the Lord Jesus Christ. To help them to grow more like their Saviour, Paul wrote a letter to those churches which is the book of Galatians in our New Testament. Early they read the letter to learn what their beloved Paul wanted to say to them. Paul had heard that some of the church members in Gal atia wanted to keep those out of the church who refused to obey some of the Old Testament laws. He told them that it was not keeping the old law that saved them; it was receiving the Lord Jesus by faith as their Saviour. The rules that they had made for church membership were not God’s rules, nor were they pleasing to God. God’s way of salvation is very simple; these Galatians were trying to make it difficult. Today we find many churches and in dividuals who are trying to make the way of salvation difficult. They are adding
