SUNDAY SCHOOL continued appear before the Lord in the day of His coming unashamed. In order that this might be so Christ must be magni fied in his body “whether it be by life, or by death” (v. 20). The Heart of Christianity w . 21-27o Verse 21 sets forth the finest philosophy in the world. The ideal life is that which is completely given over to Christ. Such a life will come to the end of the road to receive great “ gain” .’ The Apostle could not make a choice as to which would be better for him to live on in this life or to depart to be with Christ (v. 23). Yet he felt that for the sake of many believers (the Philippians included), he needed to remain in the flesh for a time. He hoped to visit the Philippians again. Whether this ever happened we cannot be sure (v. 26). The lesson closes with Paul’s exhortation as to the true nature of the Christian life. The Christian’s man ner of life should be in absolute harmony with the character of the pure gospel which saved him. (v. 27a). He ought to “ adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (Tit. 2:10). Can you believe that Paul wrote these words while he was in prison? It was not a prison as comfortable as most prisons are today; it was a dark, damp place where there was nothing to make Learning to he Quiet T hese are hectic days. The hurry and the tension is killing. Time for quiet and for God is at a premium. In the olden days when we. missed the train, we waited patiently for the one the next day, but today if we miss one section in a revolving door we act as if we had missed a fortune! The words of the psalmist in Psalm 46:10 need' pondering: “Be still and know that I am God.” The original Hebrew would say: “ Let go and know that I am God.” This is one of the most difficult things for us to do. We insist on hanging on as if everything depended on us and forget that underneath are the Everlasting Arms. — C. Victor Nyquist one comfortable or happy. Yet Paul wrote, “ Rejoice [be happy] in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.” How- could Paul say this while he was in prison? He was so thankful that he knew
