A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

There have been a number of external speakers visiting Waldegrave this week to speak to our Sixth Formers about their careers. On Wednesday, our A Level Science students were invited to a talk by Professor David Holt, who is currently working at the Worshipful Company of Firefighters. Professor Holt spoke to the students about laboratory medicine and drug development. This helped our students gain an understanding of ethical conundrums in science and how it affects legal protocols. Our students really enjoyed hearing from such an eminent speaker. Our students were also extremely lucky to have a talk by Tony Horrocks on Wednesday afternoon. Tony shared his experience of working in the IT industry. He talked about why a furious pace of change is a great opportunity and what to expect in the future. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn from one of the leading business experts in the UK and gain insights into how the working world is evolving. All our students found the talk thoroughly enjoyable and interesting. We had a fantastic Black History Month assembly today, presented to our Year 13 students by Mrs Dhir. We hope that students found it inspiring and thought provoking. Finally, as the UCAS early entry deadline approaches, students have been advised to ensure that their applications are submitted by next Wednesday morning, 11 October, at the latest to allow myself and Mr Bannister a sufficient amount of time to review them before we send them off to UCAS on Friday 13 October.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The kite runner by Khaled Hosseini

“I opened my mouth, almost said something. Almost. The rest of my life my life might have turned out differently if i had. But I didn’t” The kite runner is a novel about two young boys growing up in Afghanistan during the 70s and 80s, one excessively wealthy and desperate to please his father, the other, the son of his father’s servant with a religious standing that leads to him being further oppressed form an unlikely friendship that is torn apart after a life changing incident. Their personal lives then take them in very different directions due to the political turmoil of the country but the impact their friendship left on eachother lasts a lifetime. It explores how complex relationships are and how peoples connections and their life experiences shape who they are. Personally, I loved following how the characters changed and developed throughout the book and how even through war, abuse and prejudice, love prevailed.
