effects is intemperance in eating. Who can m easure the suffering and inefficiency from th is cause even among Christian people? In Luke 21:34, Jesus w arns again st th is as again st drunkenness: “Take heed to yourselves lest a t any tim e your h earts be overcharged w ith surfeiting (over eating) and drunkenness and cares of th is life ,'a n d th a t day (th e day of His coming again) come upon you u n a w ares.” In order to insure temperance along all lines, let us anew ta k e to h ea rt the g rea t and practical word of 1 Cor. 10:31, “W hether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to th e glory of God.” T aking Care of ou r Bodies. Prov. 23:29-35 Memory Verse.—- “At th e la st it b iteth like a serpent'.” Prov. 23:32. Approach.— Show the children a m atch and a little alco hol in a saucer. Then tell them of the wonderful body God has given us, w ith all its delicate parts, more wonderful th a n th e finest or g reatest machine man could build. How th e food is eaten and changed into blood, ELEMENTARY flesh and muscles ■and bones, supplying Mabel L. M errill th e body and keeping it well and strong. us, our real self (I Cor. 6 :1 9 ). How very careful we should be about th e things we eat or drink, and never to touch anything th a t will h u rt us. We can not always tell by th e ta ste of anything, w hether it will h u rt us or not. Wine, beer and strong d rink contain alcohol, which is always harm ful. (Touch th e lighted m atch to th e alcohol and see it burn.) It harm s the b rain and changes it, so th a t it can not th ink well. It poisons th e blood and weak ens th e whole body. The only safe th ing is to let it alone always. P rayer. Lesson Story.— Boys and girls, did you ever hear of a preacher who disobeyed God and got into a, lo t of trouble. (Review.) A few weeks ago I read in th e paper where a man was killed and ano th er one badly hu rt, as they were driving along in th e ir automobile up a hill and ano th er machine coming down ra n into them . The man coming down th e hill was driving on th e wrong side of th e road, and could not handle th e car properly. The paper said th e man who could not drive properly was d runk ; it also said the man was arrested and put in jail. Would th a t help the man who was killed and the one who was h u rt? No, the g reat wrong could no t be made righ t. You see the alcohol dulled his brain and he could not th ink righ t. In our story today it begins by asking a number of questions. Now I will read these questions from the Bible, and le t you answer when I finish. Then I will read you th e answer in th e Bible. Who h ath woe? Who h ath sorrow? Who hath contentions? Who h ath babblings? Who h ath wounds w ithout cause? Who h ath redness of eyes? T hat is rig h t H arrold, those who drink alcoholic liquor. Here is •th e Bible answer. They th a t ta rry long a t th e wine. Boys and girls th ink they can smoke and it will no t harm them , ju st as they th ink th e liquor will not harm . One tim e I was w ith a crowd of young folks on a mountain climb, and was greatly surprised when two of th e boys th a t looked strong and well, began to lag behind, stopping often to get th e ir breath. W hat do you suppose was th e trouble? Yes, they were smokers, and th e poison had h u rt th e ir bodies so they were not strong any more. Whenever any one asks us to smoke or drink alcoholic liquors, we must learn to say NO, and say it so they will know we mean it. The Bible tells us th is body is th e house in which th e soul lives, th e best p art of
God has given us these wonderful bodies, and if we do any th ing th a t will harm them , we will have to suffer, and make others suffer, too. If we will always remember our mem ory verse, it will help us so much. I t teaches us a g reat tru th . “At la st it b iteth like a serpent, and sting eth like an add er.” Things th a t do not seem h arm fu l a t first are fata l a t th e last. Closing P ray er.—Dear Lord, we th a n k Thee fo r these bodies Thou h ast given us: help us to keep them pure and holy, for Jesu s’ sake.
