M ELEMENTARY K ate H. H ans There was one who saw th e happiness of Adam and did no t like it. This was Satan, who had lived in heaven w ith God, b u t lost his high place and power th ere, because he fought against God. You remember God had forbidden Adam and Eve to eat of th e fru it of th e tree of Good and Evil, or they would die. They did no t know w h at evil was, or th a t it was sin. When Eve was by herself, one day, Satan came to h er in the form of a beautiful serpent, saying, "Did God say you shall not ea t of every tree of th e g arden ?” Eve said, “We may eat of the fru it of all th e trees, b u t th e one in th e m iddle of th e garden; we m ust no t eat of th a t, or touch it, or we will die.” (R igh t h ere Eve told a lie. Adam said, “The woman you gave me made me sin.” Eve said, “ Satan made me sin.” God was very angry, and tu rn in g to Satan, th e serpent, said, “You are cursed from th is tim e on and never shall you walk up righ t any more, b u t m ust crawl on the ground and ea t dust all your life. completely. You will try to k ill H is power, b u t He will ruin you.” Adam and Eve’s sin spoiled th e whole world, for it brought sin in to th e world. Many animals became wild, weeds and tho rn s began to grow, and th e beauty of the world was spoiled by sin, for it gave Satan a chance to work, and b rough t death into th e world. Adam and Eve felt very sad, for they were driven out of th e garden, a flaming sword kep t them out. God saw th e ir sorrow for th e ir sin, and said He would send them a Saviour some day, if they would believe in Him. God then killed an ox or a sheep, and made them coats of skin, and said, “Now, ju st as th is anim al was killed to make coats for you, th is Saviour I send will die for your sin, and you will be saved, if you will only believe in Him, and believe th a t He will come to die for your sin.
