Let us m ake them speak all kinds of languages, so they can’t und erstand each other, and will have to stop building and scatter, as they were told.” This He did, and they had to qu it building and scatter. The tower was called Babel, because of the mix-up of languages.

By and by, th e people grew so wicked, God had to des troy them . Enoch had been preaching repentance, bu t they would no t listen. He was so good, God took him to heaven w ithout dying. Then Noah preached. God told Noah he was to build an ark , to save him self and fam ily, fo r in 120 years a flood would be sent on the ea rth th a t would drown every living thing th a t was no t in the ark. Noah began building the ark , and the people made fun of him. A fter th e a rk was done, God told Noah to tak e his fam ily of eight, and all th e anim als and birds th a t were sen t to him, into th e ark , for the tim e of th e flood had come. A fter they were all in th e ark , God sh u t the door. Then it rained for fo rty days and fo rty nights, till every living thing was drowned. Noah had to w ait for 150 days for the wateh to go down off th e earth. There was only one window in th e top of th e ark. Noah opened this, and sent out a raven, b u t it did no t come back. Then he sent out a dove, b u t she came back. A fter waiting awhile, he sent ou t the dove again, and th is tim e she came back w ith an olive branch in h er mouth, so Noah knew it was dry enough to go out. The first thing he did, was to build an a lta r and th a n k and worship God, for saving them . God then set a rainbow in th e cloud, afte r the next rain, to let Noah know th a t He would not drown the people for th e ir sins any more. The people th a t were born afte r th e flood soon decided to save themselves by building a tow er to reach heaven. A fter building it very high, God came to see it. God

You see we must do as God says, or He will punish us in some way, and we can only reach heaven through Jesus Christ. He is our a rk of safety when sin trie s to overcome us, and we are only safe when we are tru stin g Him, for we cannot help ourselves, or get to heaven any o ther way. Memory Verse: “Come thou and all thy house into the ark .” Gen. 7:1 or “ I do set my bow in th e cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between Me and the earth;.” Gen. 9:13.

NOVEMBER 4, 1923 THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT Genesis, Chapters 12-14

Golden Text: “And I will make of thee a g reat nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name g reat; and thou shaft be a blessing.” Genesis 12:2, Outline:

14:1-6, victory of fa ith (B attle of th e k ing s). 14:17-24, re st of fa ith (God’s prom ise). Abram is th e g rea t ch aracter of th e Old Testam ent. He is in a class by himself. The study of his life should have a g rea t influence upon our own lives. There are seven men whose lives link th e history in Genesis,-—Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abram, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. In Genesis 11:31-32 and 12:1-3 we have th e call of Abram described. (Acts 7 :2 ; Gen. 12:7; 18:1, 26:2, 35:9) We find in these passages th a t th ere was compromise, a p a rtia l obedience (11:31, 32) a half-way house, fifteen years w ith no altar. The covenant was confirmed in Gen. 13:14-17; 15:1-7; 17:1-8; 22:15-18; 26:1-5; 35:10-15. The prom ise made to Abraham was seven-fold: (1) “A g reat nation ” (th e Jews) numerically, influen tially, spiritually. (2) “ Bless thee,’’-B in his posterity, temporal and sp irit ual. (3) “Name g reat,”— none so well known. (4) “Make thee a blessing,”— Christianity, th e sduree, type and example. (5 ) “ Bless them th a t bless th ee.” (6) “ Curse them th a t curse thee.” —view th e nations in relation to th eir treatm en t of Israel. (Matt. 25.) (7 ) “All fam ilies of the ea rth ,”— th e m illennium .

The lessons in these th ree chapters are rich in m aterial and it will be difficult to confine ourselves to the main points, bu t we will be able to impress the scholars w ith suggestions concerning th e life of Abraham and help them to read and study for themselves. This purpose should be w ith us all th e time. We are seeking to get th e scholars to read the Scriptures and study for themselves. (Note this is the first lesson of th e twelve which are included in the th ird period-—Abraham to Moses). (1) FOUNDING A NATION, 12:1-9 “ I will make of thee a g reat nation .” F aith in God’s prom ises is the theme running through this lesson. In Gen. 11:10-26 we ‘have fa ith ’s ancestry. In 11:27-32, hindrances to faith . 12:1-8, prom ise of pos session to fa ith (th e la n d ). 12:9-20, failu re of fa ith (in E gyp t). 13th chapter, choice of fa ith (Lot vs. A bram ).
