Q . Sacramento, Calif. — “Where does the Bible teach that it is wrong to play cards?” A. This question could be included with a number of other subjects of worldly connection such as dancing, smoking, etc. Without being face tious, this is to be found right next to the verse that tells us we are to brush our teeth! The Bible does not give us details down to the minutest feature. It deals with principles. On a positive note of help, consider I Thessalonians 5:22 which tells us that we are to avoid every appear ance of evil. Think how much heart ache has resulted from gambling with cards. Family funds have been squandered away. Cards have always been associated with evil surround ings. Q. Billings, Mont. — “I fe e l uneasy when I attend services at a certain church. I don’t understand why, but I have a feeling o f guilt. Can you explain this to me, please?” A. There are several different angles involved. If you are a good conserva tive Bible-believing Christian, at tending a modernistic church where Christ is not completely exalted, then you are right in feeling uncomfort able there. What fellowship can light have with darkness? On the other hand, if an individual is living in known sin, not yielding to the will of God, he may have the uneasy feel ing because his conscience is being pricked. Q. Mendocino, Calif. — “How can you tell the difference in a backslider who once was baptized with water and one who just tried to live as a Christian and maybe never was?” A. There is no possible way. No man knows the heart. Only God does. We can only see the outward appearance and expression. This should speak a word of warning to each of us. We should all live exemplary lives for 27
delights the devil. Certain guidelines tell us when we are in the will of God. First, we are never in His will if we are doing something that is contrary to His revealed Word. The Holy Spirit is never going to lead us to do something that is contrary to the Scriptures. We need to study the Bible for basic principles and guidance. There are other areas in which the Word may not be explicit. Here we seek to know the Lord’s leading through prayer as the Holy Spirit brings illumination and we find ,peace in the matter. What may be the will of God for some does not necessarily become the will of God for others. The chief thing is to be in the center of God’s known will for your life. Continue moving in that direction until the road is blocked, other doors are opened, or God in some way seems to clearly reveal the fact that you should make a move into some other area of serv ice. Wait upon the Lord patiently and He will never let you down.
While Biola College has more than 80,000 volumes in Its library, yet there is perhaps no more interesting book than the one held by Dr. Arnold Ehlert, head librarian. It is the tirst translation of the Gospel of Mark in the Auca language. Thesignatures at the right are of twelve tribal members, some of whom were the murderers of the five missionary statesmen. Books are always welcome gifts for the Lord's service at Biola. If you have some gathering dust on your shelves, why not invest them here at Biola where they can be utilized profitably.
