A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

We are now nearing the end of our first Autumn term, with just two weeks to go. It has been great to see so many Year 9 students getting really stuck into both their lessons and extracurricular activities both inside and outside of school. It has also been wonderful to see so many students getting epraise points for excellent participation in lessons, as well for supporting other students when they are in need of help. Lets keep this up everyone and continue to lend a helping hand to one another. On Monday 9 October we are going to be starting ‘The Readathon’ challenge, which this year will be opened up to Year 9 students as well as to Year 7 and 8. Students will be given the opportunity to be sponsored to read as many books as possible before Monday 6 November. All money raised will go towards buying books for children in hospital, as well as to our own school library. Donations can be given via parent pay. Students should speak to their English teachers for more information. On Thursday 12 October we have our first Drop Down Day of the year for all students. For Year 9 this will be an ‘Options Taster Day’ so that students can experience the different subjects on offer to them at GCSE. Thank you to all tutor groups for filling out the google form to let us know the subjects that you would like to ‘try out’.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

I’ll give you the sun by Jandy Nelson

“I gave up practically the whole world for you, the sun, stars, ocean, trees, everything, I gave it all up for you”

I’ll give you the sun follows two twins as they grow up and face tremendous love and loss, the narrative switches between the two and before and after a traumatic event occurs in their lives that changes them forever. It explores themes of grief, sexuality, creativity and self expression through art, identity, guilt and the importance of family. When reading I’ll give you the sun I found the writing style was like nothing I had ever read before, the metaphors made the whole storyline so much more vivid through descriptions you would never expect and the characters who wove in and out of eachothers lives were complicated and so felt very real, as if you were following their journeys alongside them.
