Over the last two weeks we have been welcoming Year 6 students and their families into school for our Open Mornings. I was incredibly proud of our Year 8 students who were such fantastic tour guides. I was also incredibly impressed by those students in Year 8 and Year 11 who gave such confident and authentic speeches during the presentations

talking about their experience of school. On Tuesday our Year 12 Drama students had a visit to the Rose Theatre in Kingston to see Shooting Hedda Gabler, a modern retelling of Ibsen’s classic play. Students really enjoyed the evening and it really stimulated their own creative ideas as they now work on devising their own performances as part of the A level study. Congratulations to Nicole B (Y12) who has won an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship and will be sponsored by Haribo throughout her A-Levels. An Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most esteemed scholarship of its type in the UK, designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams and change the world as outstanding engineers of the future. Last year Nicole took part in a rigorous selection process. She will now benefit from Financial Aid, Mentoring, Exclusive Events, and networking opportunities. Any Year 11 students who are interested in applying should look at the website to find out more and speak to Mr Grace. Thank you to all the families who supported the PTA uniform sale last weekend. We are planning our next sale in December and always appreciate donations. We are particularly in need of more smaller sizes of jumpers and skirts.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Kingston Adult Education hosts a number of workshops and courses, aimed at supporting parents with their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their children and families. Between October and November, they are running the following online workshops, at a cost of £7.50: Support your child through exam stress - this workshop aims to offer practical tips to navigate this stressful time. Help your child to be a good friend - this workshop explores how to support your child through friendship difficulties. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10
This week is the start of Black History month and we are looking at British Black women and the roles they have played to contribute to our lives today. It is also Dyslexia week so we have been looking at how dyslexia can be a superpower and famous people who have used it in their lives. This week 10SHO have maintained their lead at the top of the epraise scoreboard. We have a new leader on the individual scoreboard with Yi Lam L in 10FHE, followed closely by Daniela S in 10SHO and Annabel H in 10PCL. The Year 10/11 Rugby team played their first match against RTS on Tuesday. It was a tough challenge as RTS fielded a very experienced team. Waldegrave lost the match with a score of 15-50 points. Well done to all those who took part. The team will face more matches later on this half term and we encourage them to attend training after school on Tuesday. Our first Drop down day of the year is taking place next week on Thursday 12 October. This day will give Year 10 a chance to work on their confidence as they learn public speaking techniques during workshops with an expert. The English team will also support the students and help to coax out of our students some excellent public speaking skills and speeches with some students progressing to regional competitions.

I’ll give you the sun by Jandy Nelson
“I gave up practically the whole world for you, the sun, stars, ocean, trees, everything, I gave it all up for you”
I’ll give you the sun follows two twins as they grow up and face tremendous love and loss, the narrative switches between the two and before and after a traumatic event occurs in their lives that changes them forever. It explores themes of grief, sexuality, creativity and self expression through art, identity, guilt and the importance of family. When reading I’ll give you the sun I found the writing style was like nothing I had ever read before, the metaphors made the whole storyline so much more vivid through descriptions you would never expect and the characters who wove in and out of eachothers lives were complicated and so felt very real, as if you were following their journeys alongside them.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Significant Black Figure of the Week Bessie Coleman (26 January 1892 - 30 April 1926) was an American aviation pioneer. Coleman was born in Texas, the tenth of thirteen children. At the age of 23, Coleman moved to Chicago, where she worked in a restaurant and as a manicurist to save money in hope of being able to train as a pilot. American flight schools at the time did not admit women or black people so, with the help of a local African- American newspaper owner, Coleman publicised her desire to train abroad, eventually receiving sponsorship from a local businessman.
Coleman travelled to Paris to commence her training in 1920, becoming the first black person to obtain an international aviation licence. After undertaking additional training in Germany, Coleman returned to the USA and became a successful stuntwoman, drawing large crowds. Coleman sadly died in a tragic accident before she was able to achieve her dream of establishing a flight school for African-Americans. INVIGILATORS WANTED We are looking to expand our pool of invigilators for this Summer exam season. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided.
This will be on a casual basis with an hourly rate of £12.40.
