VISION 2028 Access and Excellence

“Being able to share our music and art with that many people is really a gift that we were given.”

Dear Interlochen Family and Friends,

– Iris, MUKTI collaborator

Interlochen’s most valuable resource is our community. We draw together students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters—anyone who shares our conviction that the arts make the world a better place. Thank you for being part of this community. Since our founding almost 100 years ago, Interlochen has grown, and each subsequent generation has benefited from—and built on—the vision, hard work, and generosity of those who came before. Together, we have a long history of setting audacious goals and achieving them. As we look ahead to our second century, we’re excited to honor Interlochen’s legacy with bold new goals and a deepening commitment to Excellence and Access . While the pursuit of Excellence is a founding principle of Interlochen, we will continue to raise the bar on arts education by connecting our students with world-class artists, educators, and experiences. This past year, we welcomed more than 150 guest artists to our campus, including New York Times best-selling author Ross Gay; Melanie Person, co-director of the Ailey School in New York; and Nathalie Doucet, Head of Music and Director of Detroit Opera House. By ensuring Access , we can provide the scholarship support needed to eliminate barriers that can stand in the way of an Interlochen experience for young artists. That’s why we have set an ambitious goal to meet the full demonstrated financial need of every admitted aspiring artist by our 100th year in 2028. Our yearlong partnership with the New York Philharmonic illustrates where we are headed as an organization. We were able to provide life-changing experiences to our current students while also opening our doors by offering 30 full Camp scholarships to talented artists from the New York City area. In our first 95 years, Interlochen has built a remarkable home for the arts and a vibrant community that spans the globe. Our success is based on many factors, including the generosity and vision of our donors who believe in our mission. Thank you to all of our supporters this year. You are helping us create exceptional opportunities for young artists worldwide.

“You are helping us create exceptional opportunities for young artists worldwide.”

On March 3 at Lincoln Center in New York City, 131 Interlochen students from every arts discipline premiered MUKTI: A Movement of Liberation to a sold-out audience at David Geffen Hall. The interdisciplinary performance was the culmination of months of hard work by students and faculty, in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic. MUKTI featured students’ original songs, poetry, spoken word, dance, and film. Based on the Hindi word for “liberation,” the multifaceted program explored issues of social justice and equity from the many perspectives and talents of Interlochen’s diverse student body.

On Saturday, March 4, Interlochen students and faculty attended a culminating performance by students from our partner organizations at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, our singer-songwriters performed select works at Rockwood Music Hall, and our jazz students began rehearsing with students from the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance and Harlem School of the Arts for a culminating, collaborative performance on Wednesday, March 1, at Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center.

The Arts Academy Orchestra took the stage for the performance’s second half, alongside 16 musicians from the New York Philharmonic, 11 of whom are Interlochen alumni. Together, they performed the works of four prominent Black composers: "Umoja" by Valerie Coleman; "Equality" by Jonathan Bailey Holland (IAC/NMC 89, IAA 88-92); "Soul of Remembrance" by Mary Watkins; and "Unburied, Unmourned, Unmarked: Requiem for Rice" by John Wineglass. All four composers were present in the audience. In the months before the performance, Interlochen faculty and staff built ties with leading youth arts organizations in the New York City area. As part of their New York tour, students attended classes, rehearsals, and performances at these partner organizations. On the evening of March 4, students from those organizations came together for a special concert at the Kaufman Music Center. Thanks to very generous donors, 30 students from these partner organizations received full scholarships to Interlochen Arts Camp. This special year of partnership and performance is emblematic of Vision 2028’s ideals for achieving Excellence and Access . It is also the next step in building a meaningful partnership with many outstanding youth arts organizations in New York.

Dear Interlochen Supporters,

Interlochen Annual Fund

Creative projects flourished at Interlochen this year. Among the countless examples is a new gift that enables Academy students to collaborate on a feature-length documentary that explores the science of regenerative agriculture. The first time we sat down with the Greenacres Foundation staff, you could feel the excitement and creative energy as our faculty and the foundation staff explored possibilities of collaboration. As we look ahead to the coming two academic years, those plans will become reality. At Interlochen, our students, faculty, and staff have the passion, resources, and skills to turn a creative spark into a work of art, a performance, or a poem that can change lives—and the world. You also fuel that creative process. Your gifts provide financial aid to students who could not otherwise attend Interlochen and give us the flexibility to make investments—like the Greenacres initiative—that accelerate excellence throughout campus. And, your gifts to the Interlochen Annual Fund, Interlochen Public Radio, and to a broad range of endowed funds result in permanent investments including new faculty positions, touring opportunities, and the wellness of our students. We share your conviction that the arts can change lives and are honored by your trust and confidence in our community to turn inspiration into reality. As always, we invite you to come see a play, concert, exhibition opening, or any student event—because the most compelling reason to support the arts is to experience this change for yourself.

THE FORMATIVE EXPERIENCE Investing in Excellence

A Bright Future for the French Horn Program

“It felt like heaven to me,” said Linda VanSickle Smith (IAC/NMC 57-60), recalling her first impression of Camp in 1956. Linda spent four summers at Interlochen and still vividly recalls the specific moment that sent her in a new direction. After Linda performed in Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, with its soaring French horn solo, the composer himself walked to the stage and invited Linda to stand for applause. Shortly thereafter, Hanson offered Linda a full scholarship to attend the Eastman School of Music, where he was the director. Linda graduated from Eastman and enjoyed a successful music career before deciding to pursue a career in social work in the Dallas area. After retiring, Linda dove back into the music world, serving on boards and creating scholarship opportunities for young musicians to attend Interlochen. This year, Linda made a generous gift to establish the Linda VanSickle Smith French Horn Chair which will ensure future generations continue to have access to world-class instruction. This year-round position includes Camp and Academy programming and and raises the visibility of Interlochen’s French Horn program. Linda also provided ongoing support to the Linda VanSickle Smith Annual Scholarship in French Horn, which is awarded to an Orchestral Scholar as well as to additional campers in French horn.

The story of Interlochen’s first 95 years is one of steady growth and improvement. From the construction of the Interlochen Bowl amphitheater on Green Lake in 1928 to the present, we have consistently added the people, places, and resources to provide life-changing opportunities for young artists. Endowment gifts secure our hard-earned progress by ensuring the permanence of the programs which foster our creative excellence and open opportunities: faculty positions; visiting artists; scholarships; diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts; touring opportunities; and more.

“I’m so excited about this opportunity to work with Interlochen’s amazing French horn students. Linda’s generous gift will allow the next generation of young horn artists to thrive in this unique place.”

THE FORMATIVE EXPERIENCE Investing in Excellence

Kearns Family Counseling Endowment Supports Mental Health Services

The world needs artists, storytellers, and scientists to help inform and inspire our communities to tackle the pressing issues facing us today. Interlochen students are ideally situated to meet this need. Thanks to a partnership with the Greenacres Foundation, they can do so. The Cincinnati-based nonprofit and research institution has engaged with Interlochen to produce a feature documentary on regenerative agriculture, an approach to farming that is more in harmony with nature and beneficial to our changing climate. The project will involve all students from the Film & New Media Division as well as interested students from other majors. A new elective course on regenerative agriculture will help students understand the science behind this sustainable approach to meeting our most basic needs. With support of a generous grant from Greenacres, three faculty have been hired to deepen the skills of students to create the film. Students will begin planning and filming in the 2023-24 academic year and complete the project in 2024-25. The completed documentary will be shown at Interlochen and the Greenacres Foundation, and will be entered in film festivals. Greenacres Foundation Inspires Student Documentary

As a crisis counselor in a public high school, Lisa Kearns understands the mental health challenges facing adolescents today better than most. So when Lisa and her husband Andrew’s daughter Charlotte (IAA 18-22; IAC 15-17, 20; IAC St 21-23) made the momentous decision to study theatre at Interlochen Arts Academy— 2,000 miles away from home—Lisa and Andrew encouraged their daughter to take advantage of counseling services if she ever needed them. “We were really comforted by the fact that Interlochen made mental health support a priority from the beginning,” said Lisa. “They were phenomenal and made a huge difference for Charlotte, especially during the stressful college application process.” In appreciation for the support Charlotte received, and recognizing the universal need for greater investment in mental health services, Andrew and Lisa established the Kearns Family Counseling Endowment to ensure that mental health services are always available when Academy students need them. “We are lucky to be in a position to give back to Interlochen,” said Andrew. “When we talked with Interlochen, we learned that there was a real need for additional staff to support Interlochen students as they deal with some of the unique pressures and stresses that they face as artists. Putting additional resources in place—permanently—was a way that we could live out our values.”

“It is great to have a partner to bring to life the research we’ve done. Partnering with Interlochen Center for the Arts will allow us to reach a wider audience and bring attention to the importance of regenerative agriculture through impactful storytelling.”

“We aspire to enhance the well-being of young artists. We want to help them build a sense of self-assurance and comfort within their developing bodies and brains. The ultimate gratification lies in knowing that we have played a role in facilitating a smoother life journey.”

YOUNG ARTIST DESTINATION Increasing Access

Inspiring Growth of Young and Older Students

Joanne Grabinski (ICCA 12, 15-20, 22, 23) was already a prolific writer and published author when she first attended a writing retreat at Interlochen. As a professor of gerontology, she regularly published articles and research, and authored a popular book on the topic of career paths in the field. As she prepared to step away from her role at Eastern Michigan University, her search for a creative outlet led her to Interlochen. “It is an interesting challenge to transition from being an academic writer to a creative writer. Interlochen’s Writer’s Retreat gave me encouragement and support and a network of writers, some of whom have become very good friends,” Joanne said. Joanne had always valued growth—in others and herself. Her experiences in the writing program inspired her to share these opportunities with others and establish the Anne-Marie Oomen and Katey Schultz ICCA Creative Writing Scholarship to support adult learners at the Writers Retreat. Inspired to do even more at Interlochen, Joanne established a new scholarship for Academy students this year. The C. Joanne Grabinski Endowed Academy Scholarship in Creative Writing is a permanent investment to ensure that young writers have an opportunity to learn their craft. In addition to her endowment, Joanne is augmenting her scholarship with an annual gift to the current use fund associated with the scholarship endowment.

Interlochen is a home for the arts that provides the space, opportunities, and resources that enable students to strive and reach their potential. It is the students themselves, however, who bring the creative spark. Each student at Interlochen benefits from the talent and creativity of their peers. Our arts community thrives when we can seek out and find the most talented and motivated artists, regardless of their ability to pay the cost of an Interlochen experience. That’s a primary reason to raise the funds necessary to meet 100% of the demonstrated financial need of every admitted student by 2028.

“I was amazed to see the opportunities that young writers have at the Arts Academy. It is a remarkable experience to have that kind of a support community and writing mentors at such a young age.”

Opening Opportunities for Rural Artists Artistic talent can come from anywhere. Aspiring artists from underserved rural areas can often face a unique set of obstacles, including fewer opportunities for advanced study, difficulty finding a peer group that shares their interests, and sometimes, the inability to afford an Interlochen Arts Camp experience. With the generous support of The Hearst Foundations, Interlochen has established a three-year program to seek out and provide targeted financial aid to young artists in rural communities across the United States. In the program’s first year, 18 students from eight different states received scholarship support totaling $50,000. They came from communities such as: Ponderay, Idaho (population 1,137); Winchester, Kansas (population 551); Electra, Texas (population 2,791); Weathersfield, Texas (population 2,842); and Hessel/Clark Township, Michigan (population 2,256).

– Joanne Grabinski (ICCA 12, 15-20, 22, 23)

“I have really enjoyed Camp. The teachers, peers, and community have given me so much more inspiration to pursue the violin as a career. This has been a very long and intense experience, but in the end improvements in me as a person and artist have been made. Camp holds a special place in my heart. I will cherish every single moment and take the lessons learned and use them in my future, from everyday living to being a musician.”

With generous support from an anonymous donor, Interlochen has launched a three-year strategic initiative to build student and faculty representation from Indigenous communities. The effort includes scholarships, faculty recruitment, and support for regional efforts to educate the larger northern Michigan community about Indigenous history, culture, and perspectives. Combined with other sources of merit-based aid, Interlochen was able to extend scholarships to ten highly qualified young Indigenous artists from four different states in the 2023 Camp season. Interlochen also welcomed visiting scholar Eric Hemenway to campus. An Anishnaabe/Odawa from Cross Village, Eric taught an Indigenous history class at the Academy and has worked with campers at the Walter Hastings Museum to add essential perspectives about the long history of the people and places of northern Michigan. In addition, Hemenway has engaged with the faculty and staff of Interlochen to seek out opportunities to deepen our relationships with local Indigenous communities. “I have grown as both a musician—being challenged every day and pushed out of my comfort zone—as well as grown as a person. Interlochen has been a special place because of the community I surround myself with and the precious memories I’ve made. This experience would’ve never been possible without your support, so thank you!”

Generations of Interlochen alumni credit their Camp or Academy experience with sparking a lifetime love of the arts. Thanks to Lyman Williams, thousands of former campers also carry a lifelong love for the natural environment of northern Michigan. From 1973 to 2010, Lyman taught environmental science classes to Intermediate campers, taking them on guided explorations of Interlochen’s woods, streams, lakes, and wildlife. Drawing on his experience as a geology professor, Lyman and his students could often be found on the ground, exploring every minute detail of the wooded environment with his students. He became known to many as the “teacher with sand on his knees.” For Joan Williams (IAC/NMC 59, UNIV 61-62), it seemed natural to honor her husband’s memory and his 37 years of work with Intermediate campers by making it possible for future Intermediate campers to have an Interlochen experience.
