Interlochen supporter Adam Sztykiel never attended Interlochen as a student. He does, however, remember his first time on campus. In the summer after his freshman year at the University of Southern California, Adam decided to make the drive from Detroit to see a friend who was performing in Our Town at Arts Camp. “At the performance, I remember it hitting me and thinking, ‘This is so far beyond any other high school performance I have ever seen.’ It was so extraordinary and moving. So even at age 19, I just looked around and knew that Interlochen was a really special place.” Many years later, when Adam and his wife Ellie Knaus were deciding where to live, they chose Traverse City because it combined their shared love of northern Michigan and the performing arts. Their oldest daughter attended Arts Camp in 2022 and enthusiastically returned in 2023. “I don’t take Interlochen for granted. Interlochen can only exist because it has such a profound system of support from alumni, and donors like me who understand how unique and important this place is. Now that I know what happens at Interlochen, I want to make sure that it continues so that when my kids grow up, they’re going to be able to send their kids here and have their own amazing experiences, too.”

At Interlochen, we celebrate and savor those moments when our students share their work with the world— those moments of accomplishment and applause. We also embrace the real work between performances. The Annual Fund supports both. It allows us to welcome talented students from all economic backgrounds and maintain the practice rooms, studios, and classrooms where students refine their craft. The Annual Fund also enables us to attract and retain the dedicated and skilled teachers who help each student reach their potential, and bring in guest artists to teach and inspire our artists to continue their growth.
