2022 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Interlochen Family and Friends,

Thank you for your extraordinary commitment to Interlochen this year. Every day, the students, faculty, staff, and supporters who make this place so remarkable teach me something new. We honored the value of persistence and the impact of philanthropy as we placed the capstone on our 30-year Sasaki Campus Master Plan and celebrated the successful conclusion of this chapter in our history. It allows us to open our new chapter focusing on our people and programs. Throughout the year, the Interlochen family showed us inspiring examples of responsiveness to the global health crisis and contributed to our understanding of the word resilience. Crisis forges character, but it also reveals it. Your fortitude has helped reveal the strong collective character of Interlochen. As you turn the pages in this annual report, you will read about the remarkable progress being made in all corners at Interlochen, made possible through generous philanthropic support. Throughout the year, your support encouraged our determination to provide the best experiences possible at Interlochen, rededicating ourselves to making Interlochen the destination for young artists. With such widespread and generous support, I want to say thank you and that every gift matters. Our successes have propelled us forward to Interlochen’s next century: a future built on 94 years of tradition and focused on an enduring commitment to excellence and a dedication to expanded access . Your enthusiastic response to these ambitious priorities is inspiring. Supporters like you are finding authentic ways to connect your areas of passion and purpose with ways Interlochen can grow and improve, leading to transformational generosity and impact.

“Your fortitude has helped reveal the strong collective character of Interlochen.”

Trey Devey

I have never felt more proud to be part of this place that you make so extraordinary, or more excited for its future.

With gratitude,

Trey Devey President

INSTITUTIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Reflecting on our Accomplishments

SASAKI MASTER PLAN: A Milestone 30 Years in the Making

In October 2021, Interlochen celebrated the completion of the Sasaki Associates Campus Master Plan, placing a capstone on 30 years of forward-thinking dedication to Interlochen’s physical footprint. The two-day event featuring Arts Academy student performances, exhibitions, and readings culminated in the dedication of Interlochen’s two most recent facilities: Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow House and the Dance Center. The 1991 master plan played a transformative role in Interlochen’s evolution from a national music camp to the year-round, multidisciplinary institution we are today. It strove to create a physical environment worthy of Interlochen’s emerging global reputation while taking advantage of—and preserving—the campus’s unmatched natural beauty. Ultimately, it guided 17 major facility projects requiring a total investment of more than $90 million, a figure made attainable by the generous philanthropy of hundreds of foundations, alumni, trustees, and individual donors. The celebration not only signified the achievement of a monumental goal, but it also signaled a strategic shift from Interlochen’s physical place to its people and programs, paving the way for future investments in access and excellence.

Dow House and Visiting Artist Suites

Presidents Dean Boal, Jeff Kimpton, Ed Downing, and Trey Devey

THE AFRICAN DIASPORA PROJECT

In fall 2021, Interlochen launched the Arts and Music of the African Diaspora, a three-year project to provide creative programming for Arts Academy students and our campus community to develop, present, and teach the music and art of the African diaspora. This curriculum encourages and enables students to study history, culture, and artistry, showcasing how traditions, techniques, and trailblazers of the African diaspora have contributed to the definitions of national music and artistic citizenry. This work is integral to our commitment to meet the needs of our worldwide community and elevate our founding tenet of inspiring world friendship through the arts. BILLY CHILDS In April 2022, American jazz pianist, conductor, and Grammy Award-winning composer Billy Childs arrived at Interlochen to participate in the African Diaspora Project. The Arts Academy orchestra performed the premiere of Childs’ Second Violin Concerto, written for Rachel Barton Pine. Childs, African Diaspora Project Composer-in- Residence Dr. Bill Banfield, and the visiting string players of the Ying Quartet conducted masterclasses and rehearsals, met with student groups, and addressed the entire Interlochen community. Their time culminated in a public concert including works by Dr. Banfield and a performance of the Billy Childs Ensemble and the Ying Quartet that included Arts Academy Jazz Combo and Jazz Orchestra students, showcasing the jazz legend side-by-side with the jazz artists of tomorrow. OTHER CAMPUS VISITORS INCLUDED: • Yuval Sharon , the Gary L. Wasserman Artistic Director of Michigan Opera Theatre, and acclaimed bass-baritone Davóne Tines • Laurin Talese, composer and award-winning jazz vocalist • Anthony Tidd , composer, producer, audio engineer, educator, and musician

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS IN THE ARTS

“I remember writing about doing a project that involves using the wider resources at Interlochen when applying in ninth grade. In some way, a part of that dream was realized under the guidance of the faculty and the opportunities provided at Interlochen, leading me to create unexpected things. I am grateful to be able to learn under faculty who are always willing to support any ‘crazy’ ideas that students might have.”

Joshua Craig Brown

Quoc Vi Bui

Actor Joshua Brown and visual artist Quoc Vi Bui became the 49th and 50th Arts Academy students to be named Presidential Scholars in the Arts. This year’s highly prestigious and competitive awards recognized just 161 high school seniors from across the country, based on their academic success, artistic and technical excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, and demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership. Interlochen has produced more Presidential Scholars than any other high school in the United States and was—once again—the only school with two scholars this year.

2022 PRESIDENT’S AWARD IN ART

“Each year, the Interlochen president selects one or more art works for special recognition. Trey Devey chose Quoc Bui’s interactive works, one of which is pictured here. Quoc strives to inspire people, focusing on transitional spaces we move through (eg, a bench).”

VISITING FACULTY

“Visiting and guest faculty help put a shoulder under students’ dreams and carry alongside them for a while.”

Among the impressive array of visiting faculty this year was Academy Writer- in-Residence Oren Safdie. He brought an interdisciplinary energy to campus, which culminated in his students’ end-of-semester playwriting showcases— The Gods Play Here and Organic, Grass-Fed Scenes and Monologues —comprised of young artists in Creative Writing, Theater, and Interdisciplinary Arts producing and performing original 10-minute plays adapted from Greek myths. Similarly, Film and New Media students celebrated the tenth anniversary of Animation at Camp, Interlochen launched a new Animation Program at Academy and welcomed a new director of animation, Briana Yarhouse. Leading the launch was Academy Filmmaker-in-Residence Bailey Sitton, who hosted Previsualization/Storyboarding, Editing, Motion Graphics, and an Introduction to Animation.

PHILANTHROPY: Gaining Momentum in a New Direction

Dear Interlochen Supporters,

Sitting in a sold-out Corson Auditorium in early October, I could feel the energy crackling around me as the curtain rose on the beloved Interlochen tradition of “Collage.” From the opening number “Magic To Do” from Pippin to the concert debut of the Jazz Ensemble under new Jazz Director Josh Lawrence, the audience was transported by this multidisciplinary celebration of remarkable student talent nurtured by our spectacular faculty. Our philanthropic focus is now on program excellence and increased student access through financial aid and scholarships. Both of these priorities have earned unprecedented support. More than 4,220 donors gave to the Interlochen Annual Fund with gifts totaling a record $5,049,602, and more than 4,160 donors gave $1,695,046 to the Interlochen Public Radio Annual Fund. These funds are at the heart of Interlochen delivering on its mission. Your support spanned many areas—new endowed and annual scholarships; new faculty positions; more visiting artists; diversity, equity, and inclusion projects; and touring for students to demonstrate their talent far beyond Interlochen’s stages—all of which are strengthening Interlochen today. Thanks to a dramatic increase in gifts to endowment, Interlochen’s financial health will be strong as we approach our second century. Interlochen has just completed its largest and most successful fundraising year ever. Your generous embrace of our mission and your belief in the promise of the young artists educated here make a world of difference.

Thank you!

As we envision Interlochen’s second century, we aspire to provide new—and permanent—levels of programmatic excellence. We know that this will have transformational impact on the next generation of creative changemakers that our world desperately needs. We seek to endow faculty positions and visiting artists in each of our artistic divisions, and academic programs; diversity, equity, and inclusion programming; special initiatives; touring opportunities; and more. Achieving these goals will allow us to recruit and retain the very best faculty to teach and mentor our ambitious young artists, and to welcome more visiting artists whose work will expand our reach and reputation, all while we deliver a life-changing experience that is diverse and inclusive for all. “Interlochen was a transformative experience for our daughter. She went from someone who could play the harp, to someone who thought she could make a living as a harpist. Had she not gone to Interlochen, and had she not studied with Joan Holland, she wouldn’t be a professional harpist today.

Bill and Linda Nelson always hoped their daughters would find careers that allowed them to pursue their passions, but when their daughter Carly (IAC 02, IAA 05-07, IAC St 13-14, 17) began her junior year as a member of Joan Holland’s harp studio at Interlochen Arts Academy, they were unsure whether classical music was a viable path. Joan was encouraging, exacting, and clear. The Nelsons credit Joan’s superb teaching with Carly’s success as a professional musician. In recent years, Bill and Linda wanted to ensure the next generation of musicians could have life-changing experiences at Interlochen, regardless of financial circumstances. To make that possible, they created the Nelson Family Camp and Nelson Family Academy Harp annual scholarships. This year, the Nelsons decided to chart a new course with their philanthropy, honoring the excellence of their daughter’s musical training at Interlochen by endowing the Nelson Family Academy Faculty Position in Harp. This endowment gift ensures world-class instruction for future generations of harpists.

I can’t think of anything more beautiful than the sound of a harp.”

PAYING BACK AND INVESTING FORWARD IN VOICE STUDENTS

“I think that Interlochen is an oasis for young musicians who need an environment that nourishes and encourages them in the arts, and where they can have a shared experience with like-minded young adults. I want to encourage young singers who apply to Interlochen and give them help. Providing this endowed scholarship supports my belief that Interlochen is here forever.

Jan J. Leeds credits her time at Interlochen (IAC 67-71, IAA 67-71) with greatly impacting both her professional and personal life, from her career in opera and musical theatre to her husband Taylor Mitchell (AS 63-65, IAC/NMC 67, IAA 67-68, UNIV 69) whom she met at Camp in 1967. Jan and Taylor decided to establish the Jan J. Leeds and Taylor Mitchell Endowed Academy Scholarship in Voice to encourage the many talented voice musicians who lack the financial means to attend Interlochen. She hopes this will encourage other alumni to give back and also prompt them to consider where they would be in their lives if Interlochen had not been a part of them. Jan notes that even those alumni who did not pursue careers in the arts are returning to their Interlochen experience because of the many ways the arts continue to enrich their lives. The scholarship supports an enrolled voice student demonstrating financial need, with preference given to those studying classical performance. By investing in the next generation of voice musicians, Jan honors what Interlochen once meant to her, and what it still means to her today, as it continues to add meaning to her life.

Arts are critical for the survival of our society. Without the arts, there is no humanity.”

THE ANNUAL FUND A Strong Foundation

The Annual Fund supports the Interlochen of today while simultaneously fueling the Interlochen of tomorrow. Annual Fund gifts are irreplaceable, allowing us to dream big, create change, and achieve what many thought impossible, all while ensuring current programs, scholarship funds, and faculty positions are supported by a strong foundation. Growing the Annual Fund has facilitated dramatic investments in access through financial aid and merit awards, as well as allowing nimble reactions to emerging opportunities such as performance tours and welcoming more visiting artists to campus. The Annual Fund allows us to respond to real-world conditions and challenges as they arise, infusing the same creativity into our financial resources that we bring to other aspects of the organization. The generous and collective support of loyal donors to the Annual Fund—the alumni, parents, staff and faculty who know Interlochen best—is a testament to their belief in the transformative power of arts education.

2022 ANNUAL REPORT

ENRICHING OTHERS’ LIVES THROUGH THE ANNUAL FUND

“Giving to the Interlochen Annual Fund is in line with our life philosophy. We believe money shouldn’t be an obstacle to recognizing a child’s talent. Interlochen has played a big role in shaping who we are as a family, and as individuals. We’ve gotten a meaningful return from our time there; when you have the opportunity to share some of that return, it becomes a very easy decision.”

Bryan Proctor first experienced life between the lakes as a camper in 1988. Interlochen Camp and Academy provided his first post-college jobs, with Bryan’s soon to be wife, Aimee Walters, making regular trips to Interlochen to spend time in this place that meant so much to him. Decades later, all three of the couple’s children have had their own Camp experiences, including their son Gabriel who felt so connected that he asked to enroll at the Academy. Now in his second year as a sophomore studying jazz performance in saxophone, Bryan and Aimee are thrilled with the education Gabriel is receiving in both art and academics. They see Interlochen as a place where he can explore, be true to himself, and where his life will be forever enriched by the diverse learning environment. Bryan and Aimee give to the Annual Fund at the President’s Club level because of their profound respect for Interlochen’s commitment to recognizing talent and doing everything possible to ensure that gifted students have an opportunity to attend.
