SASAKI MASTER PLAN: A Milestone 30 Years in the Making
In October 2021, Interlochen celebrated the completion of the Sasaki Associates Campus Master Plan, placing a capstone on 30 years of forward-thinking dedication to Interlochen’s physical footprint. The two-day event featuring Arts Academy student performances, exhibitions, and readings culminated in the dedication of Interlochen’s two most recent facilities: Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow House and the Dance Center. The 1991 master plan played a transformative role in Interlochen’s evolution from a national music camp to the year-round, multidisciplinary institution we are today. It strove to create a physical environment worthy of Interlochen’s emerging global reputation while taking advantage of—and preserving—the campus’s unmatched natural beauty. Ultimately, it guided 17 major facility projects requiring a total investment of more than $90 million, a figure made attainable by the generous philanthropy of hundreds of foundations, alumni, trustees, and individual donors. The celebration not only signified the achievement of a monumental goal, but it also signaled a strategic shift from Interlochen’s physical place to its people and programs, paving the way for future investments in access and excellence.
